My initial suspicion is too much camel toe.  It's not possible to have positive camber on a GTI with standard suspension, unless something is bent out of shape after an accident.

I suspect the total toe is miles off and is off the same amount on both sides, hence why it's not pulling to one side.

That car must have serious traction problems in the wet, and I suspect the mpg has nose dived with all that scrubbing resistance.

I am sure you are right. She's got it booked in for someone to have a proper look over it tomorrow. Will revert back with their findings!

How long have you had the car? Anything in the history relating to suspension work?

Chewing through a set of tyres in 3 months is incredible   Michelin will be looking for sponsorship deals soon

There must be a clue something isn't right when driving it compared to yours, surely?

Oh well, hopefully it's something easy to fix (and toe is very easy, if it is that) and no hidden horror stories going on under there.

She's had it for 8 years. This excessive tyre chewing has only happened in the last 18 months and it's getting worse with each tyre change. No suspension mods as far as we know.
She says the steering feels funny - esp in the wet (no sh*t!) – understeer by the sounds of it. I haven't driven hers for months so can't comment – but will take it for a short drive this weekend if it's not bucketing down.

Could it just be knackered dampers?  Is it stock suspension?

Shot shockers can cause all manner of tyre woes!

Okay so car has been into a new garage. They have found the following:

Wheels way out of alignment due to:

OSF coil Spring
S/Arm bush
NSF lower arm

Being fixed next week.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. This has been fixed, although they put the wrong spring on (Standard GTI, not Eddy) so it has to go back in for replacement!

Thought the suspension was the same between GTI and ED30

I assume they did both sides and not just one

Just OSF spring I think. They may have even put a non-gti spring on there then...

Suspension parts should be replaced in pairs, as age and wear effects them. A 100k spring will be more compressed than a fresh equivalent.

If it is a new GTI/Ed30 spring fitted then the other side is most probably shot.......or as you say a non GTI spring was fitted.

BUT as mentioned it should be done in pairs (suspension struts, springs, brake discs, pads, bushes etc), to make the handling and braking even
