CANBUS Upgrade needed for simple single DIN stereo?
« on: March 23, 2023, 12:42:07 pm »
Hi all,

Getting a bit sick of listening to CDs or shoddy quality music through a BT FM transmitter. Already tried installing just an aux with a standalone cable and CD emulator aux cable, both ended up having hissing or whining sounds, sounding worse than the transmitter.

Looking at getting a simple single DIN head unit, as I can use my phone for navigation etc. Something simple and cheap like a Sony DSX-A410BT, slightly higher RMS power than Skoda's OEM (25W vs 20W) so will sound even better. And I found a post on Briskoda saying the standard speakers can handle up to 30W.

It's one of those that you can remove the stereo face off of, do I still need to look at getting a CANBUS upgrade to prevent battery drain? No idea what version mine is, and my car has had a Parrot BT system installed (just for calls, not music), so there is one of those fuse box taps already installed I could reuse if absolutely necessary. It used to be plugged into the phone fuse before I unplugged it.

My Octy was registered May 2006 in case that makes a difference.

I know next to nothing about this topic, so any and all help is appreciated.

Cheers  :happy2:

You would need a quadlock to ISO adapter and then source a switched ignition from the fuse panel, as the car used CANBUS to turn the stereo on and off originally.

Thanks for the reply!

Does this look right? It includes a red cable to a pin that I assume is for connecting to the fuse box.

And my quadlock:

Getting a single din adapter and octavia fascia in Ireland is a bit of a nightmare though, so I may just be driving around for a while with a dodgy looking centre console

So... I know the forum may hate this install, but I've done an absolute fire-hazard of a DIY job to get it the new head unit installed  (I haven't managed to find a suitable single din fascia locally yet).

Unfortunately stays on with the ignition off, which was to be expected, as I'm too lazy to actually do the fuse box tap.

Although I did do a amp drain test with a multimeter, and removing the detachable front results in no extra drain. But if left connected, it turns itself back on after a while.

Finally properly fitted, fire hazard averted

Bought the single din adapter off eBay for €36 with shipping to Ireland.

That looks fine  :happy2:

Interesting about the whine and hissing via an aux in cable.  What radio did you have in there originally?  I had a cheap old RCD 310 from ebay and that worked great with an aux in.  Obviously it's a faff hooking it up to a phone and having no control over the audio tracks but it sounded good at least.

On the harness of your new radio, it's normally a case of swapping the yellow and red wires over to stop it staying on with the ignition off.  Key out I assume?
