Dsg service - Please help!

Hi all, just attempted to do a dsg oil change and this happened...



How bad is this? Do i 100% need a new snorkel before driving. Or could i superglue etc and refit. What job is it actually doing as reading online some people are saying its only there to be of use to get the correct level when doing the bottom fill method. I am doing the top fill method.

Any help much appreciated.

The oil filler level insert (Pictured above) allows you to overfill the DSG gearbox with oil then run the DSG gearbox to temp by following the correct temp monitored via VAGCOM… then you remove the sump plug (silver metal plug) it will drain out quite a bit then stop… then run into a small trickle… then a drip…drip…drip every few seconds then the system is at the correct level.

Thanks Greig, so if i am using the top fill method and putting in what came out (4.7l) and this things only purpose is to help get the correct level when using the bottom fill method, can it be left out altogether?  :thinking:

Yes you need it… There is essentially two sumps in the DSG gearbox… one contained above the oil filler insert and the other sealed with the sump plug (DSG SUMP PLUG). You need the filler tube to gauge the correct level of oil otherwise you will just have oil all over the floor… you could try finger tightening the broken part you have but I wouldn’t trust it… even if it did work you will need to remove it again and replace it anyway… it’s your choice if you want to put it back that way. The filler tube insert should only be about finger tight - 3 NM (2.25 ft-lbs) they become brittle with age and heat cycles and over tightening.

Surely without it though you wouldn't have oil all over the floor as the sump plug would prevent it.

If it is just for getting the correct level then i don't need it as using the top fill method you just put back in the same amount as you take out. Or does it have another function?

When the DSG sump plug is removed and the oil filler level insert has been inserted the oil won’t all come rushing out… with the oil filler level insert not inside I would imagine the oil would be under filled.

Just an update on this for anyone looking to DIY. It's very easy (If you don't break the plastic snorkel!!)

I used the top fill method and simply replaced 4.7 litres with 4.7 litres. Sat the dsg oil in front of the radiator for an hour before filling and it only took around 15/20 mins for it all to go in.

I didn't bother overfilling then draining out the excess though so please do your own research before going ahead. My steps were;

1. Remove battery and tray (also removed cone part of ramair filter).

2. Remove DSG sump plug + drain overflow - 14mm Allen

3. Remove plastic snorkel + drain rest of oil - 8mm Allen

4. Refit plastic snorkel - 3nm

5. Refit sump plug - 45nm

6. Remove filter - 24mm Socket

7. Add in what i took out - 4.7 Litres using approx 10mm tubing

8. Refit Filter - 33nm

9. Refit battery

10. Run engine and using obdeleven waited for the dsg oil to get up to temp (between 35-45c) i then ran through the P, R, N, D, S for a couple of seconds each a couple of times. (Not sure if i really needed to do this using the 'measure and refill' method but i did anyway).
