New golf owner
« on: July 13, 2023, 10:15:26 am »
Morning all

How are we all today?

New owner here. Little bit about me. 38 year old bloke lives in East London, had various types of cars such as focus St's, imprezas, transits, range rovers, vauxhalls, old skool ford's

Picked up a golf recently with suspected cam chain failure as its spins over however there's no fire or no compression. Had one guy who was helping me fix it n he's just gone quiet on me with helping me fix it so fixing it myself.

Decided easiest way to deal with this is by fitting a 2nd hand engine. I've already ordered a new cambelt kit, service kit and cam chain kit.

Anyone know what the cost of replacing the cam chain is labour wise. I'm capable of doing it myself while the engine is out however I'll need too cough up for the locking tool and the cam shaft socket. I know this is going too cost the wrong side if £250 just in parts so I'm wondering if its just worth while too make it someone else's problem.

Any suggestions or thoughts

Cheers all

Allen

Cam chain not that difficult to do whilst the engine is in. Not like the cam belt which is easier with the engine out of the car.

Cam belt worth doing without engine history. I’d test with VCDS to see if it actually needs a cam chain before doing that.

Cheers mate. I figured the belt will be pretty straightforward to change on the new block whilst it's out of the car. Did think if the chain needs doing but for the sake of £60 in tools and £100 on the kit it seemed like a no brained toi me so I'll get it all done. Prob take it all apart outside the engine, put the engine back in then crack the bolt off and get it changed. Peace of mind n all that I guess

Don't forget the resale value of the cam locking tool if you want to sell it on after doing the job. Check out Decimal Tenths on YouTube, he did a great video on doing the job.

Good point that. Never really thought about selling it off.

Cheers mate. Watched his videos a short while ago. Appear pretty informative with details and timing marks. Better go n get a tippex pen for myself tho
