Return intake mainfold flap stuck closed
« on: August 29, 2023, 01:17:47 pm »
Hi all,

I have a gold MK5 1.6 FSI (not GTI, sorry :|)
I had an orange engine light come on last week when I was on holiday. i had a local garage carry out a electronic on board diagnostic scan to vehicle. It produced the below

Codes present.
08213 Intake manifold flap positive-signal fault

Codes cleared vehicle road tested
Code returned:
08198 return intake manifold flap stuck closed

Response from mechanic -- "Would suspect intake control flap motor worn. Will probably require new motor or repair kit to stop motor going over sensor"

They cleared the engine light, and it isn't coming on anymore.
I took this to my local garage, and they advised replacing the motor. Could be roughly around 400 for the parts and then labour on top.
Does this seem like the normal action to take?

Another mechanic at another garage said to leave it until I see the engine light come on again. I haven't noticed any difference in the drive quality yet.

Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Pat

They don't have a flap motor like the TFSI.  It's a basic vacuum system with a solenoid and position sensor.  The actuator arm might have snapped off or seized.
