ED30 Misfire
« on: November 22, 2023, 12:40:26 pm »
Hi Guys,

Recently picked up an ED30 with 53k miles on the clock, will upload some pics soon.

This is my first car so I'm very new when it comes to cars.

I was having a really bad misfire on cylinder 3 so I opted to replace the spark plugs and coil packs. Unfortunately the car was still misfiring on cylinder 3 (not as bad). The next day when I was driving to the mechanics to have it diagnosed, the misfire disappeared and has been gone for the last 2 days. Is this something I need to worry about?

Could it be due to the engine temp as when I tested it after replacing the spark plugs and coil packs it was cold whereas once I got to the mechanics it was up to temp?

I have it booked into r-tech for all the preventative maintenance bits (dv, pcv, balance shaft delete, cam follower, pick up pipe, sump clean, service) as it hasn't been serviced for 2 years (5k miles), maybe the misfire had something to do with that and not the spark plugs/coil packs?

Thanks

Welcome. You may have an intermittent fault with an injector. R tech can clean/test them

If it only misfires at idle/low rpm and when hot, but is fine when driving, that is classic injector failure.

At 53K it's unlikely to be anything else, although the injectors normally last to 80-100K, so maybe it's led a gentle life, which isn't the best treatment for a GTI engine. They like lots of heat and regular use.
