Engine temperature gauge up and down!

Hi all. New to the forum.

I’ve got a late 2004 Tornado Red GTI.

Temperature gauge stay really low and goes up to about 50 when driving fairly hard. As soon as I’m coasting the gauge goes back down to the bottom 😒.

Is this normal?

Hey there, deffo not what it should do but in terms of "normal" most of us have had it at some point. Most likely is a thermostat, mine a 2006 manual has just the one which was a pig to change, but my understanding is the DSG cars have more. Plenty of threads on here you can search for more info. Good luck with it.
