Fitting RCD310 and MDI on Mk5 Golf GT Sport
« on: April 06, 2010, 05:56:03 pm »
Hi, I am looking to fit RCD 310 and MDI iPod kit on my MK5 Golf GT Sport 2.0 TDI registered on March 2008.

I have read many stories on line that people who have fitted RCD310/510 had battery drain issues. Will I have the battery drain problem?

I am assuming that the RCD 310 is a straight swap from RCD 300, my car has no highline.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you'll have problems with battery drain as your car is from 2008.  If I remember correctly cars from around mid 2007 or newer should all have a CAN Gateway of version "L" or later, which is what is required in order to avoid the battery drain issues.

Also, I don't think you need the highline display for either the RCD310 or the MDI, you just won't be able to see what track is playing on the midline screen.

Cool, thanks Neimad. I dont really mind that you cant see the track names on the cluster display.

But I found this:

You can see the track names on the RCD310 display and full ipod control including the playlist.

To make my life easier in fitting the MDI what do you think of this MDI interface harness?

That I'm afraid I'm not sure about -- I don't actually have the MDI myself although I have looked in to it a bit.  Perhaps someone else could help -- I know Darren (mortygttdi) is a whiz on these things...

The Kufatec cable is perfect - I used it when I fitted my MDI

Thanks cameluk. Did you need to do anything else or was it just plug and play?

I read the official VW fitting instruction for the MDI from here:

http://www.my-gti.com/wp-content/uploads/volkswagen_mdi_5N0057342.pdf

It had a section in the end to code the MDI???

I'm not sure if I need to do this as I do not have highline display.

Just an update.

I installed the RCD 310 with the MDI using the harness. However the MDI did not work on the RCD 310 as the option was not appearing when you press the media button.

So to answer my previous question yes it needed the VCDS to be sorted. Luckily enough the guys that I bought the MDI kit sorted out the VCDS coding after I installed all the hardware.

I am very pleased with it as my main requirement is to be able to see the track names of the songs and also browse the playlists, albums, etc. for the ipod and it looks way better than the RCD 300.

Cheers for all the info Neimad and Cameluk.

Hi all - I was thinking of doing this upgrade but had a couple of questions if anyone could help -

I have a 07 plate golf but it's one with the AXX engine imported from the UAE. Will the can still need updating to stop the battery drain issue? Is it something that can be done easily or does it need to go to the dealer?

Also my second question is, will this upgrade play up with my parking sensors? As I read somewhere that you may need to code them back or something which I wasn't sure if it was accurate or not

I currently have the iPod connection that dosnt charge the iPod connected to a rcd 300 which is annoying as I have to charge the iPod every 4 days to keep it going. As you can imagine it's very annoying when your out driving and the iPod dies!

- UAE import Golf would need the updated CANBUS
- The original iPod dock still won't give track names with an RCD 310, you do need the MDI for that
- Parking sensors should still work but don't expect to get the visual display on the RCD 310 showing how near/ far you are. Would need to fit the Optical Parking System for that.

Nice one thanks for letting me know. Any idea how much and updated canbus costs?
