Question for those that have had their sills replaced
« on: April 09, 2024, 12:01:22 pm »
Hi all,

It's time to replace the sills on my golf as they're both showing signs of rust, I've got a quote for the work and booked in for a month of so, but one question that came up was about fitting the sideskirts.

I told him that it was a standard setup (with the sideskirt carrier bolted into the sill), the problem is that when I look on ETKA I can't see a separate part number for a sill with the holes / fittings for the skirts in place.

And when I look for replacements online they're solid with no holes or anything that I can see to accommodate the sideskirt.

So question is whether there is a specific part for the sill, or if the carrier and skirt just self tap into the metal work? From removing mine it felt like there is something behind the metal that the screws go into, but maybe it's just rust!

VW self tapping screws N10354602 20mmx5mm come with the fitting kit.  I used 3M double sided tape Sill will have to be very clean for the tape to hold properly  The blocks underneath are vital

Awesome, thanks for the response, so if everything just self taps into the new sill, are there reference points on the replacement panel to show where they go, or is the old panel used for reference? Any idea?

Ill be ordering all the new fittings soon.

Hi, I think I will need to do this soon.  If you happy to say, what is the sill replacement costing you?

Well I'm in Poland, so labour costs are much lower than the UK.

I was quoted £300 without parts and painting, and from what I've seen the replacement panels should cost between £60 - £80 for the pair, but the guy doing the work will order them from his source.

Add in the new hardware and fittings, and I will do all the external paint and protection myself.

All in I'm hoping to be in under £500.

Thanks for that, but it looks like they're not using the part I'm talking about anyway.

Im talking about parts 8 and 9 here:

I wanted to reuse that instead of just glueing the skirt on, but maybe I'll just end up leaving it out.

Fitting part 9 would have to be perfect or the skirts wouldnt sit correcty. OCD would kick in  :scared: :scared:

Yeah exactly, that's why I was hoping there is a version of the sills pre drilled or at least marked for the screws, it would be near impossible to get it right without.
