GTI grill replacement
« on: March 30, 2024, 08:28:39 pm »
Having done a bit of research it looks like this is a bit of a minefield. I hit a very large pheasant today and smashed mine :(. Has anyone used undergroundparts.co.uk for bits? They look good and priced well. Any other recommendations?

Yes got mine from there. Smooth grill and plate clipped to the lower grill. Looks better I think.

Ah nice, I will go for for it. Planning on getting lower and upper grill so they match colour rather than keeping the faded lower grill.

Have you got any photos with your plate mounted low down? I hadn't thought of that I was going to drill into the smooth plastic to attach a plate holder

Got the clips on ebay, I'll try and find a link.

Nice thank you. Yeah it looks good, I might go that route. Also on the option list is to put a sticker plate off centre under the light.  Not sure on that one.

Putting the number plate on the lower grill is just going to block off more air to the intercooler.  :stupid:

If your unpainted grille/rear bumper skirt is faded, you can use a heater gun to heat it up. It will look like brand new. Don't try it on the VW logo tho, the chrome will peel right off...

The new grill and lower grill arrived today. I'm happy with the quality, and it looks much much much better than what it's replacing!

It has one small scuff on it just on the raised circular bit around the badge. I briefly considered sending it back but figured it's going to get scuffs on it from road debris pretty quick, and although it looks bad in the up close photo, take a step away and you can't see it.

Fit wise I'm very happy, really easy install and a tight and very good fit.

I had two small casualties. One was the GTI badge. Snapped the fixings getting it off the old grill so I'll be offering a new one. The other was my plate holder, snapped a hinge, but luckily I had a spare in the garage.

I decided to keep with the original plate location and drilled holes to attach the plate holder.

Anyway here's some photos..

Wow that's a huge improvement, looks great!

I really should do mine too, I was casually looking for some glossy black grills recently, but I don't know if they exist.

But this looks good.

Thanks! :)

The above company I bought these from to a gloss black grill.  I don't think it has a red strip though, I think it's all gloss black.

Forgot to say I put some c4 on the unpainted bits which has lasted well.
