Dom’s Tornado Red Gti - round two!

(1/3) > >>

Hi everyone,

Those of you who have been on here for a while might remember me. Almost 10 years ago I bought my first Mk5, absolutely loved it for a couple of years and then sold it due to my first child being born within a few months of starting a new job.

Build thread for the old one is here:

It is the only car that I have owned that I regret selling.

About a year ago I decided that I wanted another one, this time as a toy/project and ended up buying this:

It has 116k miles, really comprehensive service history, heated seats, power folding mirrors etc.

Generally it was pretty tidy, however it was obvious that it needed a rear wheel bearing doing.

I have spent the last 12 months collecting parts for it. Lots of updates to come later

Looks clean.

My best mate had bought your old GTI but has been sold on now.

How long ago was this? I think it’s changed hands a fair few times since I sold it.

So the car looked clean enough, but after I gave it a good looking over and got it up in the air it was obvious that it needed more than just a wheel bearing.

Both front tyres were down to the cords on the inside edge, the front offside sill had a hole in it, the rear subframe and boot floor looked like it had been sat in the sea, and there were leaks from the rocker cover gasket, vacuum pump and intercooler pipes and the diverter valve diaphragm had a tear in in.

A new o-ring sorted the intercooler pipe:

I ordered a pair of rear wheel bearings, revision g dv and a pair of PS5s:

Replaced the rocker cover gasket and spark plugs:

I fitted the lastest revision pcv and a new cam follower:

I also replaced the vacuum pump seals but didn't take any photos. The car also came with non oem red top coil packs, so they were replaced with oem ones.
