Selling for spares/repair, how to value the car?
« on: August 31, 2024, 09:15:05 pm »
It's a sad thing but the time has come to say goodbye to the gti I think....

I've been holding off these last few months in making a decision because our circumstances have changed and we need to get an SUV now.

The dsg issue I've mentioned on a previous thread and the helpful replies too. It might be something that someone who's good with the spanners can sort out but for me the costs for labour and recovery don't make it viable especially as I'd need to sell after fixing anyway.

So what's it worth...?

I've owned for 8.5 years. BWA 56 plate, 140k miles (mostly sensible lol). Engine starts & runs fine. Had it up to temp a few times. The car goes into D & R ok and I've moved it back and forth a few times just to keep things free.

Good bits off the top of my head:
Stage 1 Rtech
Run on Millers 5/40
New oe cambelt & pump last October.
New starter mortor & battery in March
TTRS top mounts & bilstein b4 shocks & springs a couple of years ago.
I replaced the front seats with some top condition ones with no holes/wear on bolster and have the storage drawers
Replacement smooth grill
The camchain with still within tolerance when checked last summer.

Bad bits:

The dsg/mechatronics obviosly lol
Bodywork has some scratches & dents here & there.
Headliner has sagged a bit by the mirror

It's going to break my heart to let it go but there you are. That's life.

Sorry for the waffle......Any help with how to value the car as is would be great, I've no idea on what it's worth.

Cheers  :happy2:

Tough one isn't it mate as people are just going to see a potential 2k plus bill on a car that is worth around 3k fully working.

Could do an ebay auction if you're feeling brave?! break it for parts?

Yes you're right. Hard to know if it's a cheapish fix for someone in the know or not.
I'll have a think on where to list it once I've given it a clean up.
A tear will be shed....

You don't fancy having a go at changing the solenoids as was mentioned in your previous thread?

I'm useless at DIY but would attempt it as a last resort. Not a massive outlay to possibly fix?
