Cam chain replacement

(1/5) > >>

OwenED30:
Hi all, was carrying out timing chain replacement on my eddy over the weekend, of course the adjuster bolt rounded (correct tool used) so had to try and force a bigger torx into the head with no joy, so I’m going to have to drill it out…. I marked the cams and they moved slightly as did the cambelt markings but all relative to the same amount. I put it all back together and now the chain is very noisy (wasn’t before) no problems with the way the engine runs…
I’m therefore not using it and going to sort it before I use it again…

Is my chain noisy as I’ve been hammering a bigger torx bit in and shwarf has possible gotten into the adjuster oil feed holes or is it possible that the timing has jumped, despite all the marks moving relative to one another…I’m going to change the adjuster anyway as piece of mind (anybody have the part number?)

Cheers

You most probably snapped one of the plastic rings on the cam chain cover, on refitting.

A break in one of the rings or excessive wear on the adjuster, reduces the oil pressure to the tensioner........then creates the rattle

OwenED30:
Thanks for the reply, I was thinking it might be due to a lack of oil and the chain or tensioner being noisy so this reassures me a bit, is there any tips to putting the cover back on without breaking the rings?

Was hoping I can get it off, get the bolt out, fit new chain, tensioner and adjuster and fingers crossed be back to where I was prior to messing just with a new chain 🤞🏻

mjmallia:
All depends on your cam adjuster, and sounds like it has wear.  Mine does too, so on re-insertion the rings can catch on the grooves that have worn in......it should be smooth, so extra care required or replacement cam adjuster to resolve it properly.

Looking into replacing mine and that will also increase the oil pressure to the cam adjuster and tensioner, instead of it bleeding off making a rattle at certain rpm or idle.
