Cant get Insured for a reasonable price
« on: February 24, 2025, 09:58:58 am »
Hi all,

Has anyone else found insurance this year either ridiculously expensive or even hard to get?
I wanted to add an aftermarket suspension kit but most modified insurance companies wont even give me a quote, and the cheapest without stock suspension is hastings at £1600! (I paid £650 last year)
I am 25 yo with 7 yrs NCB & both parents as named drivers with clean licenses.
Is this the norm now?

Have you tried brokers that specialise in modified vehicles? - Adrian Flux / Brentacre / Howdons

Try Sterling mate, we’re cheapest by far for me.

I tried an Adrian flux online quote and they said they couldn't give me a quote so I'll try giving them a call and see how that goes
Thanks for your suggestions though, I'll try Sterling too

Just thought I'd update what quotes I've got so far, with "suspension changes" and "alloy wheels" as modifications, Adrian flux quoted me £4.5k, and sterling £10.5k! I have no idea what's made it suddenly so uninsurable. Funnily enough a mk5 R32 is a few hundred pounds cheaper

Something definitely not right. I’m 38 with 8 years no claims, have a mk5 gti remapped to 265bhp, suspension and brake upgrades and alloys all declared and my insurance is £370 with Sterling. Car is an import aswell.

Have you tried the price comparison sites like Confused.com? I do my Insurance through them and they allow you to declare mods, mine has lowered suspension and aftermarket exhaust declared.  My insurance through admiral has actually gone down this year but I am 47 with max no claims.

I was with Directline for 6 years with the GTI but a customer for over 10+ years, same mods every year (no points, no accidents, full NCB) then they said they would not offer a renewal and no reason given......got quotes and went with Admiral for £380, which is the same as what I paid with Directline.  :stupid: Mehh!

Greenlight insure modified cars at a good price i found i have a mk5 running 341bhp so lots of mods i only declared it as 250 bhp but there's no way of them knowing the exact horsepower i was insured for the year at just under £600 only downside was i had 5000 limited milage but you can request bigger mileage will just cost a little more

I found out why it was so expensive, I was declaring wheel spacers and alloy wheels, and while alloy wheels didn't cause any issues my cheapest price dropped by over £1000 when removing wheel spacers. Tried Greenlight and they cant insure me with those mods declared, it must be some other factor which is causing it to be excessively expensive.
Thanks all for your replies!
