Mk5 Creek.. Thought it was the subframe.. maybe it's not?
« on: March 15, 2025, 07:53:48 pm »
Hi all, new both to here and to MK5 ownership, I used to have a MK2 GTI when I was 18 and cool, the Mk5 came out during the time I had the MK2 and I always wanted to get into one but life got in the way, but we are here now.

Anyway, subframe creek. The car I bought suffers with a awful creaking noise, quick Google led to me to this very forum, so I bought the creations Motorsport kit off eBay that comes with new bolts, got round to fitting them today, annnnd the creaking noise is exactly the same, zero difference.

It's a creek so bad I can feel it under my feet, happens when I pull away and slow down, doesn't really do it over bumps.

Just before I bought the car, it had two new front arms fitted, and a power flex dogbone insert fitted, can either of these cause a creaking so bad you can feel it? I thought possibly the kit I bought is just rubbish, but I'd have thought with new bolts, torqued upto spec there would have at least been some difference, even short term but the car remains exactly the same.

Where else should I be looking, lubing up or tightening?

I only ever get a clonk or a banging noise if I brake very hard, otherwise it's just this annoying creek!

Thanks for any help!

I’d check top mounts and engine mounts/dogbone mount.

I also have the creation motorsport front subframe deadset kit and have no creaking/movement whatsoever.

It's had new engine and transmission mounts within the past 3 months, it does have a dogbone insert which I might remove and see if that makes a difference. Would top mounts creek so much that you'd feel them through the floor?

Well I found the problem, and learnt a lesson at the same time.

It was the two drivers side 16mm rear control arm bush bolts that were both at least half a turn loose. Ended up buying new bolts for both sides and fitting them, and it's been silent since.

Lesson there was don't trust other people's work, and when a car is new to me, just check all bolts in areas I know to have been worked on recently!
