Edition 30 blue smoke on overrun
« on: March 31, 2025, 09:38:48 pm »
Hi all just looking for some advise noticed over the past few weeks intermittently my edition 30 on overrun (usual after going downhill) I sometimes get a blue puff of smoke out the back, doesn’t happen all the time but starting to notice it more, not a huge amount but enough for me to notice through the back window, I pulled the engine cover off tonight and found some oil around the cam cover and also noticed one of the pipes on the pcv valve isn’t sitting correctly, and anytime it’s out back it just moves instantly I have done the pull the dipstick and runs rough when pulled then smooth again when out back in I will attach pictures, also what should the compression be as I’m gonna do a compression test on it but haven’t noticed any loss in power or misfire, have also noticed a couple of drips of oil sitting on the bottom boost pipe that goes up to the turbo at the drivers side, car is mapped with bluefin also, any advise much appreciated also is dsg with 131k and running 5-30 oil.

If I remember correctly, compression should be >175 psi for a new engine, and at 109 psi it's time for a rebuild. Mine had some oil pressure issues earlier in its life but is still >155psi across all 4 cylinders. What you want to watch out for is significant differences in compression between the cylinders, such as one being more than 15 psi below the others.

Your dipstick test sounds normal. Any oil leaks in the engine bay wouldn't be coming out of the exhaust.

If you get the PCV and connected pipes replaced and the blue smoke is still there I'd assume it's just the age of the engine, meaning the valve stems are worn, based on your description of it happening on overrun. As there is a vacuum in the combustion chamber it can pull oil through the old brittle rubber seals, and then burn it upon combustion, creating the blue smoke. It can be more apparent if on a sports cat/decat. If your oil consumption is concerning and you fix the external leaks I'd suggest switching to 0W-40 or 5W-40.

Thanks for the reply mate never even got a notification to say you had replied I’m gonna get the head off and get the valve guides and seals done and get my turbo seals done while the heads off and do a compression test before stripping it only thing worrying me is I get a a loss in power under hard boost like power cuts in then out then in again doesn’t happen everytime tho it’s intermittent my thermostat is bad tho so could relate to overdue fueling as keep getting black dots of soot all over the back just hoping the rings are ok
