VW Extended Warranty - Thoughts? Worth it?
« on: April 08, 2010, 02:21:02 pm »
Hey guys, new to the forum, should be aquiring my Mk5 GTi shortly and just wanted to ask what peoples opinions of the VW Extended warranty is.
The car im getting has the original 3yr warranty for about another month and i'm considering extending it mainly due to known DSG problems in general (Although this car seems to be absolutely fine and well loved). The cost of repair in the cases i've read about seem to be high - a lot higher than the cost of a the extended warranty for a year would be or several years for that matter and from what i gather seems to include VW Roadside assisist (i think)

The car has modifications, coilovers, exhaust etc which may well impact being able to take this out - i need to find out about this - but my primary reason for looking at this was for the DSG - which has the original software still.

The other thoughts i had were also the fact that a VW extended warranty would also reflect better on the car and myself if the day should come that i want to change cars instead of one of the many 3rd party companies and VW should most likely offer the best cover.

Thoughts please? Or valid alternatives?

With only a month left of the manufacturers warranty it may be an idea if you dont know the car...I had mine for 7 months before the warranty ran out. I take it you are buying privately, if not dealers usually offer their own 3/6 month cover.

Since coming out of warranty in Sept 08 my car has had a 0.49p seat clip fail....D'oh!!.....why did I say that! :-(

I dont think DSG failures are as common as you reckon you know. If you listened to t'internet forums you'd never buy anything.

I would also check out the small print in them all before parting with your hard earned.

BTW VW Roadside assist? I recently noticed that my Royal Bank of Scotland Royalties Account covers me for Greenflag Breakdown cover, thus saving me approx £50 on my yearly insurance, I am not sure if there is anything special about VW assist, I am sure there are threads around that show they just call in local garages in many cases to assist. (though at this point cant swear to that)

be carefull with after market warranties as some specifically preclude the dsg boxes from warranty

This is why i'm leaning toward the VW warranty. Hopefully more people will input their thoughts on this.

The issue of DSG faults is a dilema TBH, talk of issues is often made out to be more common than not but its hard to know how accurate this is, so thoughts or experience here would also be useful.

I may well opt for this for the 4th year of the cars life to gauge how it goes - if i never have to use it then great, it might be money down the drain if it goes unused, but equally, if the DSG Mech unit goes then it sounds like the cost is somewhere in the region of £2k and i'd much rather the insurance of extended warranty than a huge bill.

I've got some time to research this further so we'll see how things go.

Hi mate,

I went through this last year - after lots of research I plumbed for Warranty Direct - Cover is luxury care plus and it cost me around 340 a year (it think).. hang on Ill check email... nope it was cheaper..  Â£280 for the year and it covers DSG box - if you check the cover it explains that everything is covered EXCEPT.. (and it lists those items)

:touch wood: haven't needed to call them in on anything - but it worked out cheaper than the VW and although I can't remember now there was a few other things on the VW version that sucked when reading fine print.

Hope this helps

Hi Ant

I got a Warranty Direct warrnty on Lous Bimmer and they are very good. As what as been said, it lists the things that are not covered specifically. I am having to put a claim in on the bimmer as it has started to have a gearbox gremlin and there claims dept has been surperb!!!

I was thinkg VW but with the mods i think it would be alot of hassle!!! At least with Warranty Direct you pick the garage and I dont think that will be so much of a problem. Luckilty I have never had a fault and had a visit to the dealer, just for a service so all good.

Thanks for your input guys, just tried an online quote with those guys as the blurb all sounds pretty good and for the GTi and its coming out at £407 for their network garages for Luxury cover and £488 with franchised network.

The Major plan seems to be more on par with the numbers you've put but from reading the list of whats covered i wouldnt assume it would cover DSG as it doesnt mention anything about electrical control units or anything similar on the covered items which is usually what fails on the DSG.

From research tho the Luxury price seems to be more than the dealers warranty although i havent confirmed prices and only gone on what i've read frmo other forums.

I have extneded warranty with them but not had to use them yet  :happy2:

I got a online quote then a chap from their office called me and we discussed there best policy which i think is the lux pack. I told him I'd think about it and it was very pressure free, best thing is, they list what they do not cover so i is very clear!

I think mine is about £300 for the year for everything

Thanks again people, i'm going to look in to these guys a lot more as it sounds like they offer a good level of cover and the prices can be haggled over too which is a plus.
