Oil warning light
« on: April 09, 2010, 11:09:30 am »
Hi folks. In January I purchased my GTTDI from auction. Scary experience but well chuffed with the car. It has full vw service history and is on the long life service plan. I had a mechanic mate have a look over and he was happy there was no major issues. The service book however shows that the next service ain't due until early 2011.

Today the check oil level light has come on. My question is do I top up the oil or is it best to go for a complete oil change and possible service now? Just concerned as I obv don't know the exact INS and outs of the history other than what's stamped in the service book.

Cheers

Murray

i would top it up immediately and then go straight for a oil change

not 100% about the diesels but with the GTi if that oil warning light comes on it means you are critically low.

GET SOME OIL IN ASAP!  Also check for any leaks, these engines (assume its the PD140) need to get extremely low on oil before you get the dash light on. Have you checked the oil level?

Yes I checked the oil level and it looked fine above the minimum. It came on last night when I was driving so I'll have to check now when car is cold.

Is there any issues with what oil goes to top it up until I can get it changed? Obv it'll be the correct stuff for the car but other than that??

Thanks for your help guys

My old company car was a GT TDi 170 and it seemed to consume quite a bit of oil during the time i had it - from new to about 35k and i needed to top up more often than i was expecting although it did seem to calm down a bit toward the end of my ownership so perhaps it was just bedding in during that time.
Mine had no visible leaks at all and didnt smoke so i didnt worry - although as i say, it was a company car so i worried less than normal anyway. Perhaps these engines do consume a little oil though.

Right oil level checked, it was sitting bang on the min level so not too bad. When i got the car it had some Mobil1 oil in the boot. I'm assuming that it was probably used by the previous owner so i have topped up with that.

This Lifelong service plan, its an Awfully time between services!!

Long life should only be used if you meet the criteria. Otherwise stick with time and distance.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

When I first had my car, I think I went through 1l in under twelve months. After my 10k service, it's settled down and I've used less than a quarter of a litre over two years.
