I have the same noise, but when the rear heated window is on or off, just had it lowered and its made the noise worse

Really hope its not a steering rack problem, I thought vw had sorted it by the time my car was made (56plate)

Yes, I noticed this, only happened twice in the middle of winter and it only lasted for a couple of minutes just after start up.  Seems to work fine.  I believe when the system detects the battery voltage is low it will switch off non essential high load stuff like heated glass, seats etc until the battery is up to normal voltage - I can only guess that given the low temperature and the fact I'd just started was what was going on with me but its just my pet theory.

Would be interested to know if anyone else had this too.

is this not just the clicking from the heater vents/air con adjusting? mine sounds more like a creak i suppose rather than a click

No I'm used to that, it was a definite clicking coming from the fuse box area / behind the dash.  Same as the relay click you here when you put the heated screen on, but seemed to be cycling on and off every 5 seconds or so.  Strange but never did it after that little episode...
