Clutch and Flywheel kit.....
« on: April 17, 2010, 11:43:40 am »
My 2004 GT-TDI 140 is in need of a new flywheel and i'm going to put a new clutch in at the same time. I've been down to the dealers today to get some prices.

The Clutch kit is going to cost £125.55+VAT and the Sachs Flywheel kit will be £336.48+VAT. These are the cost prices for the OEM parts. Fitting isn't a problem as one of my mates will do it (a few of them are mechanics there, hence getting the parts at cost price)

Seeing as the car has been tuned and is running 193bhp and 323lb/ft of torque, it would be worth putting an aftermarket one in, mainly to cope with the extra torque. So where is the best place to get one from that would suit the car and roughly how much would I be looking at for them?!

Cheers in advance,
Matt

Hi Matt,

There are uprated parts available but most require the fitting of a single mass flywheel which can be a bit noisy at idle with the clutch out. I fit a lot of SMF conversions, some are fine, others have a chatter noise but they tend to make the car feel a bit better and they weigh a lot less!

Some OE spec clutches come with a rating of over 350ft/lb as standard, I have mapped a replacement OE sachs clutch to 360ft/lb (on dyno in 4th gear) with a standard flywheel and not had any issues at all for over 18k miles, it depends a lot on how aggressive the map is and the actual driver.

Hope this helps :happy2:
