Rear Spoiler / Third Brake Light
« on: January 09, 2009, 06:42:45 pm »
Evening all,

Just wondered if anyone else has had problems with water ingress on the third brake light or a loose rear spoiler?

The story so far, mine was filling up with water so has been at my dealers bodyshop since monday, finally ready to collect tonight only to find they had issues with the replacement had to order a new spoiler as well due to problems while un-bonding the original.

When I arrived they had the car in the workshop (as requested so I could check it in the light) and found the spoiler was now lose and wobbly and the car covered in swirl marks

I refused to take the car back so now I am stuck the 1.9TDI Golf again until Monday when they can sort me something more appropriate from the sales demo fleet.

I normally would recommend my dealer but of this occasion they has been absolutely shocking   :fighting:

It's more likely their bodyshop have let them down Steve!

I have the same issue and was told they have to cut the spoiler of with a cheese wire type tool  :surprised: At that point I decided to leave my moist brake light alone!!

Sorry to hear about your bad service though mate  :fighting: Better be sorted for Friday

Sorry to hear about the problems Steve

Tagnut had his done for condensation issues in his high level brake light and had it fixed with no real issues. Mine gets a little condensation in every now and then too, but I'm not too worried as long as it doesn't become too excessive like yours seems to have done. I do tend to look at peoples rear lights now too :rolleye:

You could have just drilled a small hole to let the water out then put some clear sellotape to reseal it.
Without traction power is nothing!

all 3 of my GTi's have done the same, Teutonic reckon'd it was the rear wash wipe just causing the water to get it.

i think its purely heat sweat inside rear spoiler.

Perhaps yes drill a tiny hole to allow it to breath, or maybe that'll do the reverse and let more water in???

Hiya

This is a very common problem on GTI/R32 only, i have even seen the light hanging out.

I had mine done by Newbolds of Mansfield, the guy chuckled saying they had done 2 already and scratched one of them.

Anyways picked it up the same day and it was perfect, no scratches new light brake 6 months later still ok.

My theory (as I've NEVER used the rear wash wipe) is that the water gets in between the roof and the spoiler as it always seems worse after Iv'e washed it  :surprised: It's more than likely a poor seal between the two and VW have already told me they use a different bonding agent for the fix!

^^^ I would agree it must be something to do with the seal between the roof and the spoiler so water will be getting not only into the brake light but constantly on the top of the boot lid, which was another reason I wanted it sorting.

Has anyone actually done this mod? I'm thinking of it but don't wanna screw things up.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

not sure it can be done but would be better if you could drill 2 little holes and just leave them open , let the air get in and out !

It would also let jet wash in unless you taped them up each time :happy2:
