How do you diagnose a failed coilpack?

My friends 1.8 20vt just had coilpack failure and that was running really poorly.  Misfiring, sounded like a flat 4 on tickover, smelt a bit rich. Not experienced it on tfsi

More or less the same on a tfsi car did sound like a subaru :signLOL: Plus i had a very eggy smell :surprised: and the engine managment light come on

Would you say its worth keeping a spar in the boot just in case or can you still get home even though one has failed?

I havent had any probs as yet on my 06 GTI 52k

I once just drove home (only about 5 miles) and then to the VW dealer (also about 5 miles) on three cylinders.

i have just had my second coilpack gone, when i changed the first a month ago i didn't bother to take it apart to change the last 3 after testing, seems like i should have done so  :stupid:
mine goes like a 3 cylinder Daihatsu charade, sounds like esp is cutting ignition, atnd won't pull at all.

No Golf anymore. 
Enjoyed the last five years of ownership of Mk5 & 6 GTIs.
Plus an excellent forum for knowledge and new ways to deplete the bank account.

You can get home if one goes but i wouldnt recomend driving far. If you do happen to have a spare in the boot you should be able to fit it at the side of the road quite easily but you will need to find out which coil pack is playing up the way to do this without a vag com etc is to simply unplug each coilpack one by one until you notice no difference in the engine. Obviously if you unplug a coilpack that is fine the engine will run alot rougher as it will only be running on 2cylinders :surprised: If you unplug a coilpack and there is no change in the engine idling it should be that coil pack that is knackered. But honestly the best thing to do is take it to a garage and get them to do it for you :happy2:

Plus some engine covers are a right pain in the backside to get off :fighting:

Not sure how vagcom shows engine faults but the computer in work the proper vw computer just showed misfire cylinder 3

I think so mate i could still feel my turbo kicking in when mine went wasnt a nice experience when its only running on 3 cylinders though :rolleye:

I had these faultcodes when mine went yesterday, all codes dissapeared when i changed the coilpack:

Good point about identifing which one had gone, I assume a AA/RAC guy would be able to do this?

Yeah they should be able to identify which one has failed even if he hasnt got a computer its a very simple task to do when you know what to do.

I've had one go at about 70k miles. Most of the VW Assist RAC vans carry the GTI version (different from normal Mk5).

Please delete if so and I'll start a thread.

At my 2nd service 20k Awesome Gti picked up that there was water in no4 spark plug hole.

I've just fitted irridiums and all but number 4 coilpack were shiny, like new.
This was where water seems to be still getting in to it;



should I be worried?
