Road Noise

Hi All, just signed myself up to this wicked site, cant belive the the amount of info on here, great stuff.

i was just wondering how your GTI's sound as to road noise, my car runs and drives fine but i do seem to get a bit of road noise when  driving, sounds like just the tyres on the road to me...but i am unsure...are yours the same?

Could be down to the tyre brand etc but there is generally a issue with the wear on the rear tyres, where the inner edge wears much more quickly and ends up making a whining noise, mine did it on the Dunlops ..

cheers mate, ive only had the car a week and its got some right crappy tires on, both odd on the front..... one of em a kenda kaiser the other a Sport one... lmao, and some tyres by event on the rear....gonna have to get me a new set any recommendations,
225/45z/r17, i got a mate who works for Goodyear and he can get me a 30% discount so i mite go for the eagles i think.

GTI's often suffer from worn wheel bearings so could well be that if it doesnt change when you change tyres

30% discount sounds great  A lot of people use the eagle f1's and rave about them, I have been told that they are out of stock everywhere at the minute but would be worth hanging on to get them especially at that price

Vredestein ultrac's for all round best buy imo. You can buy slightly better but you will pay for it.

I have converted to these and think they are superb and can handle my Stage2 Ed30 with little issue.

Quite quiet aswell

Avoid Dunlop sportmax especially

I've had Goodyear GSD3's in the past and really liked them too.

How far does your mates discount extend ;)

I'm having the same issue. Was 99.9% sure it was the Falken FK452's so I got that cheesed off to day I replaced them!! And guess what, still the fookin same 

I aint got a clue what to do now lol mines an 08 plate Ed30 done 17K, surely the wheel bearings shouls be ok???

Mine too! Had the car about about a month now and its doing my head in!
Running genuine 17" monzas with Goodyears on the rears and Toyos on the front.
Lots of road noise!

Never noticed it in my K03 Gti at all but this is doing my head in lol. My bros isnt like it so I find it really confusing!!!!

I think it's pretty easy to tell whether the bearings are the problem. Most UK roads are very noisy, but every now and then you'll be driving along and there'll be a really smooth road, and all of a sudden the car is dead quiet (or mine is anyway). But on the vast majority of roads, the GTI is by far the noisiest car I've owned.

Recently i have been running my track tyres and last week put my summer wheels back on which are clad in PS2 and i can safely say it is like driving a limo compared to the track tyres.
If you can find PS2's anywhere i can guarantee they will give less road noise.

thanks for the info guys, im deffo gonna get the tyres changed as imo they should all at least match, ill let u know how it sounds when they are done, but like smudge said it hasnt made any diffrence to his gti, if this dosent work for me i think the wheel bearings will be the next step, but to be honest the sound may not be that bad and i have heard from others that GTI's are a little roady, due to the low pros and hard suspension, so i may be worring about nothing. again thanks

i had bridgestone potenzas on mine which i to found really noisy, however ive now changed to michelin ps3 and
the difference in road noise is amazing, they are much more quiet.
Just this difference let alone having more grip has proven that you do generally get what you pay for.
