I'm currently looking at the feasibility of getting a remap and called my Insurer, Admiral, to see how much they would charge.  Only to be told that they wouldn't insure me if the engine was modified in any way 

I went to try setting up a new policy and declare modifications and there was an option for adding a percentage power increase ...

The wifie on the phone was adamant that she was right.

Has anyone had any experiece of adding a remap to an existing policy?  How much did the policy increase by (stage 1 - 10% to 25% increase band).

Try greenlight insurance, a modification friendly insurer and specialist. Unless you are with a specialist insurer the chances are that you will pay over the odds declaring mods on an existing policy but you must declare mods to ensure that your insurance remains valid

I was with Admiral .... changed to Greenlight ..... and saved £5 a year ... not much but one wouldn't cover the remap and the other wasn't bothered :)

That would be the sensible thing, but its a little bit complicated because I have a multicar policy which I just paid for in full at the end of last month.  Despite paying £600 for the two cars and being 20 or so days into the policy, I would only get £185 or so back If i took the GTI off.  They add on cancellation fees and the cost of the other car increases as its no longer a 'multicar' policy.

Think I might have to put this thought on hold for another year.  Its odd how if I was a new customer I could declare the mods no problem but not once I've got a policy set up.

Not that odd really as your policy is a legally binding contract and in effect you are wanting to change the terms and conditions of the contract. Motor insurance cancellation terms always go against the motorist   Bummer if you're going to have to wait for your mods....

I'm pretty certain I had a remapped car when I was with Admiral once.

I was with Admiral for years and they were always competetive........until I wanted to map it. I was paying them 500 a year but after enquiring with them about the map it shot up to 700! That was for a 10 - 25% increase in power. After following advice on gear I rang Adrian Flux - 670, then Greenlight who quoted 436 for both me and the wife, full business use AND the remap! They just make it up.as they go along! Anyway I cancelled with Admiral at a cost of 50 pound but they refunded more than I had outstanding so in the end it cost about a tenner to swap to Greenlight. They also told me that I could do any cosmetic mod for no additional premium. Definitely worth a ring mate.

Wouldn't a switchable map and not declaring it do it? Nothing physical on the car is it

Insurance companies employ lots of people to ensure they only pay out if they have to. If the car was in a big loss totalling accident then they will investigate fully and they can trace a map on the car if they delve deep enough.

At least you got the opportunity to change your policy, they told me that I couldn't add a remap and still be insured by them    But if I went through their website and signed up as a new customer I can have a remap ... 

As things stand I have a cracking deal with them for mine and the fiancee's car, but If I were to pull out now I would only get £185 ish back - and I'm only a month or so into the policy.  So its really not worth the aggravation / huge extra cost on top of the remap to swap to a different insurer at the moment.  If only I'd thought of this last month ...
