rattling ticking engine sound
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:54:45 am »

hello,

i have owned my mkv gti since nov last year and it has always made a slight ticking, rattling noise. is this normal? also it sounds like a diesel when i first start it up although that soon quietens down apart from the ticking noise. the pic is of the thing that seems to be making the noise.... what is it? and do i need to change it?

any help would be greatly appreciated!   :happy2:

I think that's the fan belt, a picture of the entire engine would help in identifying.

Mine was quiet on start up & then had the diesel rattle when up to temp.Turned out to be the small cam chain & tensioner (right hand side of engine).  :happy2:
ED35. Standard factory condition.

Ain't that the Alternator belt and Alternator (thing for charging the battery - sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs)? Mine sounds like a diesel on start up and does quieten down a bit when warm but if you tickle the throttle slightly at idle it still sounds the same. I've also had my cambelt changed which I believe has solved some peoples issues but not mine.

the thing thats rattling on mine is just above the fan belt, its bolted onto the side of the actual engine block and not fixed to the belt or alternator part at all... i think im gona get the cambelt changed and tensioned and hope it helps....

In your picture on the left hand side there is a black plastic contraption with hoses going into it.  This is the charcoal filter and it will tick periodically and is normal.  The thing slap bang in the middle of the picture and attached to the block is the auto tensioner for the aux belt (or fan belt as its still known).  I had one of these go bad on me with my mk4 and it made some strange noises...

If that is what you are talking about, IIRC the part was about £80 (albeit for a 1.8T engine but they look much the same) - not too much labour to change either.

the object you have indicated in the picture is the aux belt tensioner, replace it at dealers alongside the belt, in fairness it shouldnt take more than 30mins for a qualified tech to complete. I have had all my belts tensioners / idlers and water pump replaced under warranty at 19k miles as i had all sorts of noises.sweet now though
