USB via MDI not loading - RNS-510
« on: June 06, 2010, 11:01:22 pm »
Since upgrading guys, hit an issue with the MDI + USB interface. I expect it's a defect/bug within this version so hopefully there's a workaround or fix?... (Did the update from this thread. All went through a treat in under 55 minutes  :happy2: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,7154.210.html )

In essence, I've got the MDI interface in the arm rest all setup and it's been working a treat (for around 6 months).
Since upgrading, I've hit a problem where every second time I start the car, the RNS spools but doesn't load the media module and obviously doesn't play from the MDI. If I select it manually, it just displays an empty screen as though nothing is selected  or inserted. So to put it another way, when the cars started and the RNS-510 auto loads, it simply doesn't load the last point in the media I was playing and acts as though its not there :chicken:

If I disconnect the USB flash stick and re-connect it, it still doesn't load even if I click the button in the top right hand corner of the screen (the AUX button on screen). Clicking this still doesn't load and the only other options I've got are the 'extra' features, these being HDD capacity and turn off display which are obviously no use.

The only way I can fix it is to lift the whole MDI tray out the arm rest, remove the aux in lead that feeds into the bottom of the tray, then it instantly re-recognises it on reconnection but obviously this is no practical workaround.
Is there a firmware fix or configuration fix of any kind?

I've played with the 'aux input' settings, but on low, medium and high it doesn't react differently and I can reproduce the issue at will. Can do a vid if my explanation needs to be clearer

Proper annoying in the meanwhile... :sad1: AND the aircon's just gone, no cool air or USB for me!

Thanks  :happy2:
Pete.

Not sure I understand why you are using the AUX button with the MDI

Are you disconnecting the AUX in cable or the main cable to the MDI

If the USB stick is connected to the MDI, shouldn't you be selecting the Media In option

Firmware 2800 should be available now for download which is a bug fix, just haven't located a copy yet  :sad1:

I know on my unit with 26xx firmware it doesn't always recognise my USB HDD unless I disconnect it from the MDI, something I've learnt to live with, but I don't have to remove the MDI to reset it

I'm not Camel, sorry for the confusion in terminology. The truth is I forget what the button is listed as in the top right hand corner (I think it says AUX or similar) and when I say AUX lead, I mean the Kufatec lead that connects to the bottom of the MDI tray within the arm rest itself. Luckily my wire was long enough so I have acres of slack to lift it out, disconnect it and re-connect it.

That's fairly poor if you have to disconnect yours each time, sounds similar to my problem. You say that's fixed in 2800?
Is 2800 a free upgrade and if so, from where?

I'll do a vid perhaps which might explain more clearly in an interactive sense as I'm aware some of the terminology in my description isn't 100% accurate - bear with me :happy2:

Thanks.
Pete

Just to clarify, it definitely says AUX In the top right hand corner. This is the top lay of buttons (top of the screen) where you select the input device you want when in the 'media' module i.e. when you press the RNS media button on the left edge of the unit, outside the screen.

It's always say AUX in all the time I've had it configured, so that must be right.
Just had the same at lunch, turned it on, had a CD loaded which plays fine, click AUX to load the MDI and nothing happens. Click it several times, doesn't load still and nothing plays on the USB flash stick.

So I selected the Radio button to put it to FM, opene the arm rest, pulled the MDI tray out the arm rest, disconnected the Kufatec lead (MDI/AUX Lead), plugged it back in, clicked the Media button back to the media module and the 'AUX' button flicked to MDI briefly, then back to AUX and it loaded the flash stick and continued playing from the last point where I left off with the last mp3 it was playing. Strange huh?  :indifferent: :stupid:

Can't locate 2800 to download at the moment

I don't get an Aux button onscreen, just CD SD or Media In (plus greyed out bluetooth)

I don't have a Aux Socket so I think I disabled it in the RNS menu which may be why I don't get the button onscreen

There is also a software update for the MDI floating around somewhere that may help

Thanks for the link Camel.

DL'ed the file, copied it to a blank memory stick (as 'mdi.bin.enc') and inserted it when the RNS was off. Turned it on, pointed to media and:

 :indifferent:

This clearly seems bit of a challenge

Wonder if you current MDI is below firmware 900, which this new software won't upgrade from.

I think there is another link for the previous update, I'll have a look  .......

Older update is here http://www.my-gti.com/wp-content/uploads/mdi.bin.kw33-2009.enc

Whatever I did in the process, it seems to have fixed it Camel. So thanks matey  :happy2:

I ran both the latest MDI update and the version previous, both produced the error 2 posts up but inadvertently, it's fixed it as I can't reproduce it now. Every time it seems to load the MDI in about a second and resumes playing from last point  :congrats:

Top stuff  :drinking:
