I took all mine to pieces last weekend, and its a bugger to fit the pipe etc

Fun isn't it  :rolleye:

Steve do you have to run the Aux cable from the back of the HU or can you pick up the pins on the end of the cd changer?

Back of the head unit.

I found on moschops cd changer loom for non aux in car the pins required - 1,2 & 7 were free on the head unit end (once the ground pin for the changer had been moved to the correct position).

Hello,

My set up has everything connected (overkill if you like :signLOL:)

VW must do a cable for the CD Changer and the Aux socket, the ones I bought to do the job are the wrong ones as they will only connect the CD Changer up and not the AUX as well. At present I don't the correct part number.

So Mr Forum (SteveP) took my cables (looms), CD changer and the MDI kit and has made a loom to connect them all, which after todays fitment I'm pleased to say they all work.

Do you have the CD changer already? and the correct housing ?

If not you'll need to swap the housing, get the correct cable, Aux socket and also the correct air duct to run though the arm rest.

I have new arm rest section (with the Aux cut-out), the CD changer only cable (no spur to also connect the Aux-In) and the new section of A/C ducting. It would appear I have to live with the Aux cut-out as the option of the CD changer armrest without the hole is no longer available. For 35p I can buy a blanking panel for the hole - job done. But I'm not a fan of blanking panels as it looks like something is missing. So, I figure I may as well fit the Aux-In socket but I'm not sure what I need other than the socket to get it working?

For what you say above Moschops, there is a different CD changer cable that also has the connection for the Aux-In socket? What does your setup look like? I appreciate Mr. P made it for you, but I'm guessing the cable that runs from the back of the head unit to the arm-rest splits - with the main connector going to the CD changer and a spur going to the Aux-In?
I think this is the case a frieng at work has an Eddy with these options fitted from the factory, now I may ask Dickie for his reg number and see what VW parts throw up, or the alternative is to take SteveP up on his generous offer and you won't tell the difference... :notworthy: Choppers... :happy2:

cameluk - In answer to your question, the multiplug at the changer end of the cable has two vacant pins...

It looks at though if I want to add the Aux-In, I need to buy a different CD changer cable  :sad1:

My alternative is to see if the CD changer will fit in the glove box, but I can't establish if this was ever an option on the Golf - only the Passat. According the CD changer cable installation instructions, you can fit the changer in place of the hand-book recess with a new DIN-size adapter - which would enable me to keep the more useful storage space in the armrest - but the instructions don't give any details of part numbers or which car/model the glovebox installation covers.

Animal, camel has put up  a picture and I think part number for the glove box adapter in another post on here, was related to fitting an MDI in the place, had pictures of the golf box I think.  worth a search!

I took all mine to pieces last weekend, and its a bugger to fit the pipe etc in you have alot of screws and trim to come away, and my biggest tip would be to remove the handbrake trim early doors, theres a small clip on the bottom, and pull the hand-brake up to the limit of its ratchet, was the only way I could get the trim past, and will save you ruining your handbrake like I did!

Tell me about it...me and Mr Greenous had a mare removing this whilst Mr P sorted out the Camera on the Eddy...R32 to do.. :stupid:

If you are changing the standard arm rest to the version for the cd changer/mdi version and have the rear vents working then you will need to change the air channel pipe that runs underneath to clear the bottom of the cd changer

Its the biggest pain in the rear to change over  :fighting: as it appears to be too big for the space available

Also the pipe that goes round the gear stick and through the central tunnel has chnaged in its appearance, ordered using the part number above but instead of deviating both ways round the gear stick, it now just runs down the Left hand side, so dont be disturbed if something different to the above turns up! 

It is a right pain and after 10 hours of trim removal and wiring I was in need of a  :drinking: 

Fitting the air pipe, changer cable and BT kit all in one day may have saved repeating some work, but I was well knackered after!

I found the post you are refering to, cameluk posted an image of the MDI USB port in the glovebox - but this is just a cable that hangs loose. The CD-changer installation guide refers to a specific part that replaces the plastic tray in the glove box that holds the car handbook with a proper DIN size housing allowing you to mount the 6 CD changer in the glovebox. I'm still not sure if this is possible of the Golf though.

Steve, many thanks for the offer. All this talk of how difficult swapping over the HVAC ducting is has put me off a little but if I do persue this, I shall definitely give you a shout.

For the record, I'm not actually fitting a 6 CD changer, I'm fitting the old USB-In system (pre-MDI, i.e. The old one that behaves like a 6 CD changer - it's stop gap whilst I wait until I can fit an RNS-510) however, from what I've read, the priciple is the same as if I were fitting the changer. The USB-In unit is DIN size to fit the armrest. I'm currently leaning towards trying to fit it in the glove box to retain the more usable storage in the armrest and also to avoid the aggro of changing the HVAC duct. It'll also be a lot easier to pass the wiring through to the glove box than it will be to thread through the centre console. I have a DSG, which from what I have read is harder to remove than just popping off the gaiter on a manual?

Mine is also DSG, and with the new HVAC ducting you dont need to fully remove the gear gaitor, you can get alot of play by removing the plastic surrond and the gear selector cabling and just dragging the plastic base up over the knob.  I certainly didnt remove the gear selector release, as i believe this requires a special tool to re-spring this into place for re-fitting.

My Eddy is also DSG, now with the CD Changer came some instructions which details on what parts/screws to remove now had we read this beforehand we'd have ourselves some the hardwork in removing the arm rest housing to put the new air duct in. :stupid:

Also we didn't have to touch the duct that ran round the gear stick/shift, just the tail end piece that runs through the arm rest. :happy2:

Animal it's worth doing as it tides up the cabin now end  :happy2: R32 to do now.. :smiley:
