Seibon Carbon Wings
« on: April 26, 2010, 06:09:43 pm »
Why:

Well i have looked at both Osir and Seibon carbon products from the start of me owning the mk V GTI, and even though i like the look of carbon, i'm not interested in carbon looking vinyl or parts that are only covered in carbon as a finish.
When i recently had another car in my left wing due to an illigal lane change made by him, i could (i keep telling myself) justify buying these wings for the 10mm wider arch for some extra cleareance as i have bought a set of 8,5"x19" ET48 which i plan on running 235/35-19" tires on.
So a phonecall to my carpartspusher  and a couple of weeks later i looked at these in their garage:

They looked amazing, until i looked at the backside, they are like the Osir parts glassfiber covered with one layer of carbon  :sad1:
My initial goal was the 10mm wider arch so i decided to use them anyway.
So of with the old wings, not that easy to remove, lots of foam is used to make chambers in the wing, i assume for the reduction of roadnoise. and fitting the new ones so it could get to the paintshop.

After the paintshop was done with it:

Conclusion:

The 10mm wider arch is worth it IMO,
the fitting is a pain in the a**,
finish if you want to keep the in the raw is 85% because of the difficulty in fitting and the finish on the edge going along the hood of the car.
It's not 100% carbon

All in all i will give a rating of 6 out of 10, mainly because they sell it as carbon and it's not.

(thx to RR for his excellent examples for reviews  :happy2: )

Great stuff Jake.  :happy2:
I like the way you justify your illness, with a ten mil gain in arch room.

Excellent post, Jake(?)  :drinking:

Trouble is that I now hate you for it! I'm trying to make my mod shopping list shorter, not longer!

I love your touch of letting the .:R logo display in the carbon finish.

I'm afraid that except in the racing world, a lot of 'carbon' products are made with a fibreglass backing. You get what you pay for and the racing stuff can be astronomicly expensive.

Hi Jake

Did you refit the oem wheel arch liners with the carbon wings?

Yes, but to be 100% functional you need to widen them so they rest on the inside of the fender  :happy2:

Hi Jake,  did you compare the weight in the two arches?

I have also seen a replacement roof panel, but chances are you'd be looking up at some ugly finish.

Sorry Neil,

I didn't , but i still have one stock laying around, i could weigh that, and i believe that the weight of the Seibon's are somewhere on the net.

Best i could find

Weight lost is okay but the main factor in these are they are 10mm wider IMO  :happy2:

So your running wider on the front than the back now Jake, should give more traction, how have you found it?

tyrewise i've got 225's front and rear, but for everyday use when weather prohibits i will run 235's for extra traction. I'll let you know when they are fitted  :drinking:
