Power loss
« on: January 20, 2010, 07:44:58 pm »
Hi,

I firstly would like to introduce myself, as you've probably worked out from my username i'm called Daz.

Bought my 55 plate Tornado Red GTi 2 months ago absolutely love it, big into Vw's got a 1982 T25 camper, big into the whole club camping thing.

BUT.... the old Golf has been a bit of trouble, I picked the car up from the dealer, not VW but a very respectable dealer, after 2 days the engine management light came on, to cut a long story short they ended up replacing the cat after about 2 weeks of running backwards and forwards and a lot of phone calls.

The 2 months warranty they gave me is now up, just been out this morning and the car seems ok pulling off and accelarating, gave it a blast along a dual carriageway, got the 70mph warning, put my foot down in sixth and the car dies, doesn't cut out but is abslotulely flat and won't pull anymore.

I backed off the gas & it returns to normal.
Can anyone give me some advice.

Could be the DV (Diverter Valve). As yours is a 55 plate, it is likely to have one of the earlier versions of the valve, which are more prone to splitting.

Do a quick search for "DV" or "Diverter Valve" and see if the symptoms of other members match yours!

Where abouts are you based, perhaps there is someone on here fairly local to you who may be able to some logging for you using VCDS. You can find a list of users here - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=120.0

Suggest you change the diverter valve...it's around £45.

My car's diverter valve failed 6 months from new.  They are a known issue/common point of failure...  If you get a new one make sure it's revision G or above.

Alternatively, a Forge re-circultaing diverter valve - they are a bit more dough though.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

I am in market drayton. Shropshire, which is midlands..ish, i would be willing to travel a few mile if anyone can help, other than that i will book it in to a garage next week.

I will search the DV now, is it an easy fix, have basic engine knowledge but nothing too complex

Thanks :happy2:

Check  HPFP fuelpump and cam follower. very easy to do and should take you about 15 mins. If they are bad, Warranty. Also while you are there check cam for wear also.

mine does this sometimes, DV makes no difference to me as have used diaphragm and piston type and has done it with both.
