KW (-20mm) and 17's - possible?
« on: January 13, 2009, 12:15:16 pm »
I am wanting to stay with 17's on my 05 GTI and not go the 18" route unless i have to. will i be ok for ground clearance with -20mm KW springs? I'm debating whether to buy them but problem is if they ground i'll have to go for 18's, and i'll have to get the sportlines (-30mm) don't want to buy 2 sets of srpings if i don't have to.

Hope thats all made sense  :happy2:

There should only be about 3mm in difference between the 17" diameter and the 18" so your only sitting 1.5mm lower.  IIRC most on 18" find a 20mm fine.

So you should be OK!!

....

I'm on V3's and with an OSIR front splitter and still okay for clearance (except multi-storey carpark ramps).

....Huh? Thanks, but I'm not on 17's - I'm on powdercoated Smoked Chrome Monza 18's : -

Also, most people (I'm sad to say) setup their suspension primarily led by what it looks like and how low they think they can go.

I wish I had £1 for each time I've read about someone getting it not quite right (or horribly wrong!) and having to re-do it - Invariably by trial and error - It would probably have paid for my suspension. Sorry if I sound irritated but I think people are such fools if they ignore the importance of the setup adjustments and just go on the looks regardless.

I can understand your views, but with all due respect i simply wondered if i would have clearance issues. to say ' I think people are such fools' is not really a comment that is warrented or needed. i asked for clearance advice with -20mm and 17's. you posted pictures of Varient 3's and 18's, huh? unfortunately i didn't mention going for looks alone, the fact i am going for 20mm KW springs would suggest that i have not gone for 'low as possible', as there are much lower available and quality has been a factor. hence opting for the KW's  :happy2:

You've misunderstood my post by taking it personally and I've misunderstood your post by interpreting your words to mean that you were primarily led by ride height and I was expressing merely my opinion in reaction.

No problem - It's easily done on internet posts  8)

Hopefully someone else will give you the answers you need.

I've had the KW's fitted  :happy2: so far i've not seen any drop at all from standard GTI  :ashamed: which is annoying. Was hoping for a genuine 20mm but so far can't even see 5mm  anyone else got the KW's fitted?

car feels great, much firmer. to be honest i don't chuck the car round corners etc so not noticed a geat difference, but the difference i have noticed is all good. its settled a bit now and has dropped all round. not 20mm though
