I'm really peaved off at the moment with this pile of sheat country and me and the wifey have been speaking and know a couple of friends who have already emigrated to OZ so was really thinking the big life changer and moving there.

I need all the info you boys may have

mates of mine moved to NZ and love it but they did say things are expensive out there but they have a better life so its a small price to pay

Well family and friends, its hard seeing them.

Obviously finding a job that pays what your looking for...

You get more sun.
You get more space.
The standard of living is better.
The girls are gorgeous (if you're allowed to look).
You can get a "Ute" with a V8 (I would).

But it is not England.


Seriously though, I have a friend who emigrated (chasing after a girl) and he doesn't like it. He says too many of the people are rednecks, and they have draconian Internet censorship laws, draconian car modification laws, draconian speeding laws (more so than the UK!), and a government that manages to be more inept than ours.

Personally I found Melbourne (we're I've spent the most time) to be too much of "little USA" for my taste but that was just visiting for a couple of weeks.

Also I'm struggling to think of any Australian intellectual innovation, but most people probably wouldn't care.

Guess the best thing to do is investigate and spend a couple of weeks there if you can and speak to others who have done the "prisoner's move".

my old man has lived out there for the last 15 years and i try to get out there at least once a year cos its awesome.  Everything about the place is just better than the UK,

Having lived in germany for the last 8 years and only just moved back to UK, i also absolutely hate the country.  Ill be moving out there as soon as i finish this degree and my time in the army. 

The only drawbacks are that you you need to have a pinch point trade or specialist skill that is required in Oz, otherwise you wil require a sponsor.   I have both

Oh and the houses are awesome and cheap as well.  If it hasnt got a pool, games room, BBQ area and aircon then you really havent been looking hard enough

Its crossed my mind multiple times. The only thing holding me back is I dont know what career I want here in the UK so will be stuck in the same situation as if I go to Aus. I will need something sponsor worthy as it will be a waste of time if not.

A mate of mine has been there almost a year and managed to get a design job and they want to sponsor him but have left it too late so he may have to come home or if he can buy a report from a farmer signing off that hes done his 3 months agricultural work he can stay another 12 months.

^^^^ Absolutely the best piece of advice anyone could give you.

Beware of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence.

having lived in two different countries I would war you like RR has said, grass isnt always greener, and it could possibly open your eyes that england isnt all bad after all. There is a reason why everyone wants to move here, and its not about the benefits for everyone  

Dont let us put you off though, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The best times of my life werent spent in this country, and I didnt even have a fast a car  

I will be leaving at some point in my life also, again.

I went to oz when I was 23 for a year. played semi pro football and bummed about a bit. Really glad I did it (sold my mk2 big bumper GTI to get there). I think if I had family there I would have stayed. as it was I felt a bit homesick so came home a bit early.

Awesome place but a totally different way of life. I was in Frankston just outside of Melborne.

My company actually offered me a transfer to Sydney a few weeks ago but the wife was having none of it! 

The constant dripping of rain on my head is slowly driving me mental!

My advice would be to take a fact finding holiday first and scope out the place before selling up here. It's not for everybody!

....Wifeys can be so conventional and dull sometimes! Fear of the unknown instead of a sense of adventure, I reckon. I had a similar experience with my (now ex) wife: An opportunity to move to Vancouver and she didn't want to go. English girls, eh! I should have stayed with the Venezuelan one - Filthy rich family too. The exact science of hindsight.

i really dont want to bring my daughter up in this sinking ship guys so ive set myself a target which is before she goes to her high/collage school say 3-5 years. I want to be over there and settled, i'm going to look through the trades tomorrow and then see about poss courses i could take?

I'm just in the process of sorting out all our finances, so all we will have left is the mortgage so we can sell the house in the 4th year and use the £50k or so to buy an house and any thing else needed over there.

What am i likely to get for around £50k ??
