Passed my Sector driving course at work today
« on: May 14, 2010, 02:58:03 pm »
Hi guys, just thought (as it is motoring related, that and I am well chuffed!) that for the last 3 weeks I have been training for a police standard driving course, which is basically blues and twos driving, not pursuit..yet!

Great course, basically feels like learning to drive again, but a very tiring course, doing about 400 miles a day in turns between 3 of us, but so intense as it teaches open road driving, but that can be at about 110 miles an hour.
Using the roadcraft approach to driving, (which I do like, other than feeding the wheel!) Doing it in a BMW 320, a very nice car, but it was only done in the dry, wouldn't fancy the rear wheel drive during the rain/Ice.
Now just got to keep up the practing and maybe someday get an advanced course!

my bro did this as he is bombdisposal.  he said it wasnt an easy course at all.  said it was really hard to drive fast whilst narrating the road and hazards as you go.  But he said it was one of the best course he's ever done

It is an amazing course, saps the energy out of you though.
Its the advanced course where you have to give the commentary, as they do the pursuits. The force are thinking of changing the policy so that we can pursue, until a traffic car gets to us anyway, so that will be back for more training.
Look forwad to my first blue light run when i'm back at work on Monday.

Wait till you get chance to practice a SMEE   Now that is fun.

Did a few similar courses with the Met at Hendon a few years back. It definately takes a lot of concentration and i always felt mentally fatigued especially after night drives as there was a lot to take in.

One thing i did learn though was before i did the courses i "thought" i was a good driver. After the courses it showed just how good modern braking, suspension etc are and how lacking in ability i was.
