Swap RCD-300 for an RCD-500?
« on: May 14, 2010, 04:29:23 pm »
Hi,

My GTI only has a single slot cd player and no cd changer in the glove box or arm rest. I would like the functionality of a six cd changer and wonder if anyone has any experience of changing the rcd-300 for an rcd-500?

My car is a 2005 "55" and ideally I just want something which will just be a straight swap without any need for complex wiring work or firmware upgrades.

Can anyone advise is this is possible and if it's a simple as being an rcd-500 from eBay and just swapping them?

Thanks again,

Simon

Allardice, with the RCD500 and the age of your car, you will almost certainly have to upgrade the CAn gateway to avoid battery drain issues.  all the info you need should be on www.my-gti.com

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. According to that website it appears their shouldn't be a power drain issue as long as I am changing from a 2nd gen to another 2nd gen. As this is what I plan to do it appears this may not bee too much of a problem.

Can anybody clarify this?

Thanks,

Simon

I think you're getting mixed up with the rcd-510.  That is the non sat nav version of the rns-510.  If i remember correctly the rcd-500 is pretty much the same as the rcd-300 but you can put 6 disks in it individually.

They are just a straight swap, the most difficult part is taking the dash apart but patience is all you really need

No power drain going from a RCD 300 to RCD500 or RNS510 upto firmware 1100

You only suffer from a power drain if you upgrade to a RCD310/510 or RNS510 with firmware abover 1100 and you have a can gateway older than a K

I'm selling my RCD500 if you're interested?. It's less than a year old as my old one was replaced under warranty. It's the mp3 version with all silver buttons/dials and is complete with key-code & manual.

PM me if you are interested.

Well there is quite a range of prices, and the mp3 version like mine are pretty rare.  There are no mp3 ones on at the mo. E.g This one [ebay]200468410861[/ebay] is £110 (inc p+p) and isn't the mp3 version

Plus mine is only 8 months old & does come with the manual & code. £150 would include postage.

Hi all,

I have now purchased an RDS-500 and managed to remove the old unit and fit this without much of a problem. However, the CD function does not seem to work and when you press load it comes up with an error message "ERROR - SERVICE" and will not accept any CD's.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong and how it could be fixed?

I have already tried the travel mode reset by holding the 3 buttons on the sticker and this does not resolve the problem.

Any advice very welcome.

Thanks,

Was it shipped to you in Transport mode, if not then I suspect that the CD mechanism has been damaged
