Forum Insurance Discounts
« on: May 18, 2010, 10:36:56 am »
Hey all,

I expect to be putting a deposit down on my MkV GTi later today.

And I wanted to get a decent insurance quote.

I tried to do a search of which insurers offer discounts on this board, but was not successful.

Can someone let me know what the current offers are?

Thanks!

There are a lot of factors which can affect your insurance price.
Such as Age, NCB, Location, and most importantly modifications.
If you have, or are looking at customising your car then I would reccomend Adrian Flux, I pay £440 a year, with all modifications declared and covered. and I have 7 years NCB, and am 28 years old, living in a slightly rough area.
If your car is standard then Swiftcover and direct line can be quite competitive.
Afraid I do not know of any forums that do discounts though.  :happy2:

As has been said, for modified cars Adrian Flux, Chris Knott, Greenlight etc, etc. For standard cars try usual suspects, most of the specialists will just ask which car clubs you are part of and give a little more discount! :happy2:

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I'll follow up with the insurers you've mentioned.

FYI:
I'm 30
10 years of no claims.
No points for 5 years.
Not the best location.  :ashamed:
The car will be standard.

Is it best to get the quote, and then mention the forum?

If the car is going to remain standard then try the usual comparison sites, if an insurance company wants to know if you are part of a club they will ask and apply any discounts, its usallly the specialists that will ask about clubs.

Hi mate - if there is even a small chance of you wanting to mod it in the future, check the policy is ok with that. I have been caught out with my mk5 via HIC this year for not checking, and to chip it would double the premium as I dont have a 'go faster' friendly policy. Embarrasing realy as I should have checked because I mod all my cars  :chicken: I find that specialist, mod freindly insurer's can be cheaper that the mainstream as well. Anyways, HIC is another for you to try.....and I also had a good value policy with LV once too - good luck.

I just came back from travelling around Asia for 6 months.

What I didn't realise until I just checked is that I still have two months left on my old Swiftcover policy for my old car.

They're going to charge me £60 extra to move the insurance over to the GTi, so I think I'll do that for now, and do a bit more research for renewal time.

The only performance mod I have in mind right now is the Bluefin remapping in a few months.  Although I'm open to suggestions!

With the comments above, I think going for a specialist insurer will be the way to go.

I used to use specialist insurers when I drove my Civic Type-R, and it always worked out very well financially.

Thanks again for all the input.
