17" R888 tyres were rated W = up to 168mph  :chicken: :surprised: :scared:

What are the dangers of actually exceeding the speed rating on a tyre? I would've though friction, but then sticking a car at a corner at 80mph would surely create more.

Chaps dont put too much faith in your GPS's...

I need to be able to bore people at length about GPS technology and its fair to say the GPS Tech in your average Garmin stick to the windscreen unit is in terms of performance like having an ED30 with a 750cc two stroke engine.

They calculate position on where they think they are as opposed to where they are.

I've got 2 in my company vehicle that are only good for a tenth of a nautical mile 90% of the time (certified) and they're £70k each with an antenna the size of a side plate.

You're best bet for accuracy is find a measured mile marker on the UK roads and a stopwatch and try to calibrate your speedo with a %age error. If it was reliable plod would use it

the golf can not do 180+ Rich as the gearbox is not geared for it and if they do 180+ then thats just about super car land and its a golf not a supercar as you have to take the shape of the thing into account

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

Max speed i've had is 171mph according to GPS but that was virtually redlining in 6th (Skoda Octavia vRS Stage 2+ on the Autobahn)

You would need to change the gearbox to get higher. As already said 180mph is not achievable

Think he means on the clock Mat. That's definately possible as I have seen it myself (not me driving mind)  :scared:
There are boat loads of vids on YouTube of S3's and Ed30's doing that speed. I would put them up but....  :scared: :scared: :scared:

....Ok but consumer GPS systems for the motorist are a damned sight more accurate than OEM speedometers.

GPS aside, its fairly safe to assume that the rev counter is accurate at those speeds as its not fluctuating and gears are fixed, so gives you a ball park figure as well likely to be most accurate.

I've only seen my Golf round to 120-ish but feels like it would go faster, dunno about 160 quicker, it must take a long time to get that far as its not the most aero dynamic of shapes and its more about power to get up to those speeds.

My RS4 could get round to 160 pretty well but then that had over 420bhp

....

My top speed so far is 143 mph on unrestricted German autobahn and was held. At that time my car wasn't remapped and though she accelerated quite well up to around 130 the time from 130 on was sloooow! The hatchback aerodynamic is not great. Oh, and I had two passengers and suitcases etc - Fairly fully loaded.

Regularly driving at +125 mph on the autobahns is what prompted me to follow Audi's cue and fit LED Daytime Running Lights - At high speed be seen! Well, at any speed be seen - The most common statement at the scene of an incident is "I didn't see them".

I dunno if its the case on non-xenon cars, but i know on mine once you go over a certain speed (something like 100mph i think) it automatically turns on the headlights so you're seen coming - its a feature that can be enabled and disabled i believe. Seems like a good idea to me tho

GPS is a lot more accurate than has been mentioned as they are all accurate to within 20m (until the americans turn it off again)

BUT the problem lies in the Fix. You need more than 5 Satellites to get a true fix (to within 20m) but consumer GPS will work of 3 and just triangulate to give it "there or thereabouts".

This is where the inaccuracies lie on consumer systems.

Oh and these multi thousand pound GPS are no more accurate than a couple of hundred pound system.

We have some handheld GPS in work that are around the £7k mark. I have a Garmin Foretrek wrist GPS. holding them next to each other they both gave me the same 10 figure grid reference (which is accurate to within 1m).

What you pay for with these multi thousand pound systems is for extra software and capability so for example like ours in work it's able to be encrypted, plugged into some communication systems, plugged into various other bits of kit.

So in terms of using a consumer one for Measuring your speed it will be a damn sight more accurate than your Speedo.
