Thats usually cars that have Auto headlights. It's normally 80mph because that is the "advised" limit on the De-restricted sections of Autobahn (130km/h)

GPS aside, its fairly safe to assume that the rev counter is accurate at those speeds as its not fluctuating and gears are fixed, so gives you a ball park figure as well likely to be most accurate.

I've only seen my Golf round to 120-ish but feels like it would go faster, dunno about 160 quicker
, it must take a long time to get that far as its not the most aero dynamic of shapes and its more about power to get up to those speeds.

My RS4 could get round to 160 pretty well but then that had over 420bhp

Fook me mate, 280mph!!! What mods you got?

Regularly driving at +125 mph on the autobahns is what prompted me to follow Audi's cue and fit LED Daytime Running Lights - At high speed be seen! Well, at any speed be seen - The most common statement at the scene of an incident is "I didn't see them".

I dunno if its the case on non-xenon cars, but i know on mine once you go over a certain speed (something like 100mph i think) it automatically turns on the headlights so you're seen coming - its a feature that can be enabled and disabled i believe. Seems like a good idea to me tho

....Not enabled (if indeed an option) on mine (tested) and anyway headlights are not as effective as LED DRL's when assessing the distance of a faster car bearing down on you at high speed. Even dipped headlights dazzle and also hide the size of an approaching car.

LOL no air resistance on a dyno though

Autolights come on at 90mph

Most I've seen in the DERV is 130mph

GPS is a lot more accurate than has been mentioned as they are all accurate to within 20m (until the americans turn it off again)

BUT the problem lies in the Fix. You need more than 5 Satellites to get a true fix (to within 20m) but consumer GPS will work of 3 and just triangulate to give it "there or thereabouts".

This is where the inaccuracies lie on consumer systems.

Oh and these multi thousand pound GPS are no more accurate than a couple of hundred pound system.

We have some handheld GPS in work that are around the £7k mark. I have a Garmin Foretrek wrist GPS. holding them next to each other they both gave me the same 10 figure grid reference (which is accurate to within 1m).

What you pay for with these multi thousand pound systems is for extra software and capability so for example like ours in work it's able to be encrypted, plugged into some communication systems, plugged into various other bits of kit.

So in terms of using a consumer one for Measuring your speed it will be a damn sight more accurate than your Speedo.



Err trust me not as simple as that  - even if it gives you position to 20 places doesnt't mean its that accurate, theres all sorts of errors that consumer basic single channel GPS's cant cope especially at 300kph  Doppler/HDOP/URE theres a long list...

Survey equipment is vastly different from stuff that travels and is accurate.

I've had mine with a groundspeed of over Mach One

Er... I believe the gearing of the Mk5 allows for a maximum of 245 km/h (152 mph) for a manual 'box or 243 km/h (151 mph) for DSG. Anyone claiming to exceed this without changing their gearbox is talking cobblers.

Your speedo may be 5-10% inaccurate at those velocities.

Your GPS will provide a considerably more accurate, but still wrong, estimation of velocity (it will be a vector remember). DaveB1970 is correct in saying that using a GPS as a reference for this will still result in an inaccurate calculation. Apart from the triangulation issue, there is a fair amount of correction for latency which will have to be applied, resulting in a margin of error that grows as the velocity vector increases. Mater may be right about how a stationary fix might be the same on a "consumer" GPS device as with a "professional" or military-grade device, but a stationary fix is not so important. There is a latency which is the transmission of GPS signal from the satellite to reception by the receiving device; this is compounded using more GPS satellites (which does allow for more accuracy/precision). There is then some calculation time which in most consumer electronics is achieved by using a look-up table or simple algorithm which will be calibrated (due to limitations of processing power available) for "normal" speeds. As the velocity vector increases the error in calculation grows larger. This is why military-based GPS systems, especially those used for guidance of ballistic or cruise missiles, can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars, and why GPS (or other GNSS)-based safety-critical applications are not available.

The best (and only real) way to determine speed (or velocity) will be using an absolute fixed reference with a calibrated chronometer (or tachymeter).

...and the headlights come on at 130km/h. Says so in the manual.

Thats absolute rubbish.

I have had my car tested against a police car on a runway (using VASCAR) and he clocked me doing 158.3mph (coincidentally my satnav said 159mph  :P)

The absolute maximum velocity for a 2.0TFSi engine (without changing the gearbox) is about 174mph. That would be redlining in 6th gear.

So i think you need to go and re-work your sums  :P :P

I'll check my sums again when I have time - I don't deny that it's possible that I'm wrong, but a quick check of Wikipedia concurs with me. Remember what I said about the only accurate way to measure velocity. VASCAR is a hugely flawed system, relying on external (nonabsolute) reference points, the observing vehicle's speed and human reactions and judgement (i.e., I judge you to have passed the shadow/marker/line/whatever on the road at this point and pushed button 1, then when I passed the reference I pushed button 2).

There have been several court cases where VASCAR data has been thrown out because it has been incorrectly referenced. Laser-based technology is superior in this regard.
