Thanks for all the responses guys BUT......my question has not really been answered.

Without being to technical is there a easy way I can check to see if they really have replaced my timing belt??

Because this will do my head in until I know.

That and visually a new belt looks new, compared to an old belt which will look... well.... old.

If its like any other VAG belt it'll have the printed writing of PN etc on it which will stand out unlike on an old one.

If its like any other VAG belt it'll have the printed writing of PN etc on it which will stand out unlike on an old one.

Thanks......... but I did not know until last night after I picked it up when I was having a nose in the engine bay...... there is a plate on the side of the engine that you can remove ....I presumed that is were the timing belt is located?.

Anyway when I picked up the car last night the book has been stamped with the words " Timing Belt Replaced" on the service page with a receipt reference number....I was happy with that.

With all the excitement of getting the car yesterday I woke up EARLY this morning for work it's never been known!!  So this morning I had a little look behind that plastic plate held on by one lock screw.

Now in reply to S2 ANT:  The belt behind this plate does not seem brand new...... if that makes any sense..... however it looks in very good condition..... you guys will know you can't see an awful lot of belt behind this plate.

I still pressume this is the cambelt?...... to add the two visible torx screws that hold the cover on above this plate have been recently taken off as I can see by the shiny heads.

I only went as far as the plate removal..If I took those two visable torx screws out does that top part of the cover come straight off or is there more things that need removing?

I can then 100% Judge if it's a new belt or not.

I wonder if the Garage got this far? and thought better of it.

I think you need to relax a bit and have more faith in the garage, if they stamped the book - I'd say they did it. An indy garage can ill-afford to lie about doing work and suffer any potential fall-out if it comes to light that they didn't do it. Only a tiny minority of garages are un-trustworthy - if you're really that bothered, get a second opinion from else where.

I seriously doubt they'll have used genuine VW parts if you talked them into doing it for free though.

How much was that kit pictured? Could you do this diy? Or do you have to pretty much drop the lump put to get to it?
