At what mileage should the cambelt be changed..?

I'm having my cambelt changed tomorrow as my car is 4 years old.  VW changed it at some point to 4 years or xxmiles (I can't remember the mileage) from what it says in the service book.

If you do a search for cambelt you will find numerous posts as its been a hot topic for a while.

I think its four years or every 60,000 miles. I maybe wrong but think the water pump is normaly changed too .

My car is at 58 000 and is 5 years old, I need to sort it out really, its on my list of things to do!

According to my dealer it was changed to 4 years or 120k. Had mine done at 4 years with about 80k on the clock

The cambelt tensioner is a good thing to change at the same time too

It's included in the genuine VW replacement cambelt kit though the water pump is extra.

The kit comprises cam belt, tensioner, two rollers plus a nut & bolt.

Thanks Guys I'll have to check to see if its been done  

I rang the garage this morning and informed them that the car requires a cam belt kit under the manufactures guidance and could they check to see if this had been carried out by the previous owner.

The Garage (Local Family Business) checked with VW / previous owner as it only had one and this has not been carried out  

I had shook hands on the deal on Saturday and I covered everything that I was concerned about apart from this!!!!!

After posting on here over the week-end I realised I was looking at £300 - £400 to get this done.  

I called the Garage back this morning and voiced my concerns....They said they would call me back......Now this would not of stopped the deal as I have set my heart on the car but to be honest after insuring it I did not really have the money to get it done any time soon. And I would of had this beating my head in every time I drove it in case it went.

After all the cars I have owned I can't believe I forgot to check this!!

Anyway they have just called me back and said they agree it requires changing and they will cover the cost and it will be done for when I pick it up tomorrow.

Obliviously I am ecstatic at this news.......I am not a lucky person at all......and I find it hard to believe they have agreed to this after the deal.

But it might just be my evil mind ????? and I apologise if this is incorrect but what if the Garage does not really put a new belt kit on...But say they have thinking it would of stopped the deal, I mean there is not a lot of people buying second hand cars at the moment with all the downturn etc..

How would I ever know? How could I check?

I too just purchased my first golf GTI with 60,000. As reading above it looks like mine is due for a cambelt change. The dealer i bought the car from gave me a 12 month warranty which was good. Do you think i should wait for it to go? Or order it be changed or what?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I certainly wouldn't wait for it to go 

If that happens at Motorway speeds thats a new engine you need not just a cambelt

I had mine done at 52k miles at about the 2 1/2 year point on my Octavia (same engine as GTi)

I would get it done if you can. The way i see it is pay £300-400 now or pay £4.5k+ for a new engine.

If it failed outside of the recommended servicing cycle then warranty wouldnt cover it anyway as you failed to maintain the vehicle as described.

As for Mr Punch, is the garage a VW garage or just a random car sales place? Just make sure they provide you with receipted proof the work was carried out as VW parts come with a 2yr warranty which obviously you'd want proof of jsut in case.

Yes it's a random car place....I will ask for proof, these places tend to send them to a local mechanic each of these Garages have there own choice as you will be aware....

But it will always be in the back of my mind has it really been done...... until I can visualy see its been done if you get my meaning.

I know exactly what you mean and can be very anal about getting these things done. I'm not as familiar with the 2.0T lump as i am with others to know what associated parts usually get done at the same time.
I know water pump is one but not sure if there are any other bits and pieces which should ideally be done as well
