Another GTI purchaser's questions!!!!
« on: February 01, 2009, 01:27:52 pm »
Looking a bit more seriously now at the Golf.....

Ideally I want :-

Leather
3dr
sat nav
DSG with flappy paddle?
Armrest
18" Monzas
Luxury packs (winter/summer?)

Now, I've tested a manual (back to back with an S3 - the GTI was better!) but I need to go and try the DSG, as I haven't tried it, but I was hoping you guys could shed some light on the other aspects...

The Sat Nav - is it actually worth having? I've got TomTom on my PDA. There's references to the comparison between the RNS510 and the MFD2. Is the MFD2 cr@p? I'm looking at around a 55/06 plate so I'm guessing that it will be the latter rather than the former!!
I also want to connect my Ipod Touch - do I need anything else?
The Sat Nav box - can it play DVDs? (I know the RNS can though)

What I suppose I'm getting at  - is it worth holding out for a car with the SatNav when I've got other items that already do the job?

Are there any colours to avoid? Red always used to be a problem, but is it ok now?

Do they all come with the Highline computer display?

What about the winter packs etc (don't know which is which!)

Seen a few for around the £11K mark with 20K-odd on the clock.....

I *think* I've come to some conclusions though.

1. DSG (and Flappy Paddles) - FANTASTIC pretty much all around however, there are some pitfalls.

(a) On newer models, very good indeed.
(b) On older models (I'm looking at around an 05/55) - DSG can be a bit sketchy! Due to the risky bearing issue.

Therefore, probably an option to steer clear of on an older car  - or is this rubbish?

2. SatNav - lol!! The main thing I've learnt is the minefield of VW options
On the 05/55 (and up to 08 cars), the options are MFD2, or the RDNS510 (at an additional cost)

However, it doesn't play MP3 disks, nor DVDs, and the SatNav software only does 4 digit postcodes in 2D. Correct?

So, if I find a car with it, all well and good. But I've already got a PDA with TomTom, which will be better software.

3. Stereo (MFD2 or RCD300/500) cr@p on standard speakers. I'm coming from a Bose-powered Audi S4, so the sound is 'kin amazing.
Is it just the speakers that are rubbish, or head unit?
Can I get away with just uprating the speakers? I was contemplating the Dynaudio stuff ;)

Ipod - I've got a Touch, so the Ipod armrest option would be pointless. Regardless of which model you go for (including the "MFD3"), the Ipod integration seems to be rubbish (poor track selection - I'm not reprogramming playlists!). So, I would be looking at a Dension option perhaps.

Haven't found much out about the paint, nor the "other" options though.

Can anybody confirm/deny whether or not I'm on the right lines?

I think the vast majority of people that will be able to help you will be at the pod today I think matey so guess you'll probably be able to get an answer to the questions later.

My car hasn't got any of the spec you after so can't help you with the DSG, sat nav etc so can't give you an opinion on them, but with regards to the Ipod touch I was under the impression that due to the format of the software on them that the standard headunits were unable to pick up your artist lists etc and the only option around it was with a AUX input. Again I don't have one in the car and make due with MP3 CD's which isn't an issue for me.

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help but I'm sure they rest of them will be on later on tonight.

With regards to the paint the only thing I found when searching for my car was that white and steel grey seemed to be the hardest colour to find. I don't think there are any issues with any of the paint shades i'd just get your heart set on the colour you want and try and find the best example.

My 2p there and hope its helped in some way.

If you have to ask why, you'll never understand.

i will answer a few

they do not all come with Highline, its was an option

sat nav makes the interior look better, you wont get an RNS510 (unless owner had it retro fitted) on the age car your looking at, the RNS510 can play dvd's and has a hard drive too (30 gb), and a sd card slot, i think some on the newer MFD's were dvd too, but you needed the nav disc in to have sat nav working on the MFD (not an issue on the RNS as the maps on the hardrive)

All colours are fine, red is too

at that age look for noisy steering as the racks can go, also do all the usual checks
