« on: May 29, 2010, 04:50:48 pm »
Hi,

I am thinking of upgrading to the RNS 510 unit in my 07 GTI.

I dont have the highline display will the 510 still work also is it just a straight swap from the standard unit or is there more to it?

Any help much appriciated..

Thanks,

You CAN gateway may or may not need an upgrade depending on what version RNS you put in.
Other than that it should still be plug and play despite the lack of highline.

They work in an Octavia without maxidot so see no reason why not.

Like Ian says your CAN Gateway may need upgrading for revision C units but A/B units should be ok.

If not I'm sure someone nearby with VCDS can code for you for a few beer tokens.

I'll do it for a diet coke if your near Folkestone  :happy2:

They still work fine without Highline.

Sorry to barge in, but I'm also thinking of going the RNS route (over my current MFD2 DVD version). I want to go with the CAN gateway upgrade just so that I can get the latest version of the RNS without worrying about battery drain issues.

As my car is a 2005 GT 2.0TDI, I've got quite an old CAN gateway installed (see scan below)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 19: CAN Gateway        Labels: 1K0-907-530.lbl
   Part No SW: 1K0 907 530 E    HW: 1K0 907 951
   Component: Gateway         H09 0110
   Revision: 09          Serial number: 2700104B300478
   Coding: 3D3F0B48070003
   Shop #: WSC 01279 785 00200

No fault code found.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Questions are, what's the best version to go for, and is the best place to get one at the stealer or anyone on German Ebay. Any ideas on typical costs from both.

Finally, I'm OK with VCDS doing the general fault clearing, and re-coding using the long code helper etc. What exactly would be involved in changing the gateway and is the changeover pretty straight forward, and would my limited skills of VCDS be enough ?

Thanks and again, sorry for hi-jakcing the thread.

Current can gateway is 1K0 907 530 AD £153  from the dealer and is version AD

Anything above version L will be fine

About an hour to change over, once you have found it

Note down everything ticked in the current gateway, i.e Engine, ABS etc
Install the new Gateway
Reprogram the gateway with the same options selected as the old one, note that items may move around in the list
Clear any errors with VCDS
Go for a short drive to reset the ABS and Steering Wheel
Job done

Oh and scare yourself silly when the rear wiper doesn't work until you have been driving for a while  :chicken:

This is all sounding a little bit complicated to me!! Can anyone recommend a good fitter in the midlands area to fit/supply and fit a RNS 510?

I'm pretty sure Ben @ Shark Performance would fit your RNS but I doubt he would supply that would  be down to you.

Worth an ask though.

Fitting a RNS is really easy, I swapped mine for a C in under 20 minutes

Swapping the can gateway is harder especially if its located above the pedals - the VW designer must have been having a really bad day when deciding where to locate it
