Just completed my Brake upgrade today so thought Id add a few pics/info.
The Brakes are B5 RS4’s Some waffle on them by Audi:
Brakes were also developed jointly in house by Audi and Cosworth Technologies, not by Porsche as with its' predecessor, the RS2. It has 360 millimetres (14.2 in) diameter by 32 millimetres (1.26 in) thick radially vented and floating cast iron discs at the front, with double-piston floating brake calipers, giving the RS4 braking to match, needing less than 50 metres (160 ft) to come to a full stop from a speed of 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph).
My thinking is there are deemed suitable to stop a factory 400 bhp car that weighs approx the same as a tanker they shold be ok on a Golf!
My main considerations for brakes:
Fitment: Had to allow fitment of ET51 wheels without spacers
Cost: Sub £750
Weight: Not to be much heavier than the factory 312mm items.
To say that limited my options was a understatement! After a lot of google work and red herrings I found reference to these being the same caliper carrier spacing as a MK5. Personally prefer to do things a bit differently so purchased them hoping they would work. After contacting daveb it became apparent that with some custom parts it was a goer.
What's Required:
Audi Calipers, Carriers, Pads and Discs
Custom carrier spacers, disc spigots and mounting screws.
Optionally braided lines.
Having got the audi bits from Edition38 I ordered the bits required from Daveb. After a couple hours of graft all fitted as expected with zero drama
.
My experience of Mk5 brakes includes standard 288mm, 312mm and r32/s3 set ups. In addition I had 330mm Brembo 4 pots on my last MK5. So how do these compare? Having covered only 200 miles on normal roads I can say im very impressed. Excellent initial bite, good feel and undoubted stopping ability. Performance on par with the Brembo’s but the caliper pistons seem better matched to the master cylinder giving better feel, this is often overlooked with upgrades.
Weight: Discs 600grm heavier each but calipers/carriers 400grm lighter so little change.
Didn’t wish to splash out on expensive pads until I confirmed the fitment. I plan on upgrading from the £40 Mintex’s I currently have fitted
. No doubt this with improve things further as well as going to vented rears.
Will update with further info and feedback once I have covered more miles and a trackday or two.
pics: (please ignore the poor fitting bumper, looking into intercooler options)
