Space savers

So I got a puncture. 

Drove home last night, was fine. Parked up and reverse into garage. Heard a low grating sound. Figured it was a stone or something given the neighbours were doing up their back yard. Drove out this morn and still heard the grating noise. Checked under the car and couldn't see anything. Wasn't impairing vehicle function until a mile down the road. Then I noticed the car wasn't handling well and seemed to dip to the left. Figured I'd better pull over  and inspect the tyres. That's when the warning bell went off.

PS2 tyres were out of stock in the two nearest tyre places, so have to wait for stock.


Until then I've got the crappy spacesaver. Rather alarmed at how thin it is.


Anyway, I digress. The point of this thread is to ask about how to drive with the spacesaver. I was going so slow and granny-like, I got overtaken by a nissan micra!!! I take it that the rim won't hold usual driving styles.

How long can I use the spacesaver for? Once it's used, can I reuse it? Any other precautions?

think they are limited to a maximum distance and speed limit, i paid for th full size spare for that reason alone.

I would strongly suggest that you check that the pressure is correct on that tyre as most seem to be under pressured from the factory.

I've heard figures of 100 miles usage from it but don't know for sure.

As for a replacement tyre, have you check online for mobile tyre fitters who come to you to fit and balance the tyre? May be quicker than waiting for you local tyre dealer to get stock.

The local tyre place will get it ready for tomorrow but because of work, won't be able to get it fitted until friday morning.

I will have covered a total of 40 miles with the spacesaver. The tyre place sorted out the pressure.

Looks like I'd better look for a spare pescara + tyre + boot space adapter.

50 mph & change asap.Never fit a space saver to the front.If a front tyre needs changing remove a good rear wheel,fit that on the front & space saver to the rear.

Tis the very reason why I junked my space saver a while ago. I purchased a full sized 16" steel wheel with a brand new Dunlop 205 section tyre. Rolling radius almost identical to my 18"s. Had to fit it a while ago, and to be honest didn't even know I had it on. The car felt no different to drive. Externally was a different matter. The gloss back of a steelie vs a nice 18" alloy hmm....

Had to fit the boot spacers and it does rob the boot of a little depth, but TBH, I've never needed every last mm of boot space anyway so no real biggie there. One good thing though is the boot spacers give you lots of nice cubby holes for triangles, oil containers, etc etc..
