S3/R32 Splash Guards - How to adapt for GTI?
« on: June 07, 2010, 06:23:03 pm »
.
For rear brakes but I guess the answer would apply to fronts as well.

THX to JPC for selling me the splash/stone guards and packaging them to look like pizza's with a bite taken out! And sexy black bubble wrap - Never seen it in black before.

IIRC there's a 'trick' necessary to adapt them to fit the Mk5 GTI when with S3 rear brakes. Can someone please confirm and, if so, try to describe what the adaptation is?

I can photograph and post pics of my guards if it helps.

Thanks  :drinking:

RR,

Are they for the rears?  If so I don't think they will fit.  Send me your Chassis number and I take a butchers on Etka and find which guards will fit.

I'd best PM my chassis #.

The guards Jay sold me are 1K0 615 612 S and 611 S and dated 30/07.

My Etka chassis number converter is playing up.  I will try again later.

RR, you need S3 alloy hubs for them to fit, stokey is your man for these parts. if you buy them you need all the bolts to fit them as well, 7 pieces methinks    :drinking:

fronts fits on your existing heavy iron hubs, but will of course fit the light and steering lightened S3 alloy front hubs  :P

Cheers, Jake  :happy2:

I have S3 brakes on the rear and AP Racing BBK on the front (already with splash guards, I think!).

Oh crap does that mean I need to get S3 Alloy Hubs to get my R32 rears fitted with the splash guards? I am sure I saw somewhere that someone had modded the splash guards to fit?

Fairly obvious Alex.  Just offer the disc up and push the guard away slightly around the circumference, then when you get the disc mounted, check it will rotate without catching the guard.

Ideally it should be close enough, but not touching not to allow stones and shyte to get caught between the disc and guard (ask TC about the noise that makes!)

HTH

ps the disc is the first thing you fit so it makes it easy.

When I first fitted my S3 rears ages ago, I tried the s3 guards that came with them, and could only get one out of the 3 bolts to fit.  To get the GTI ones off I had to cut a piece out, due to the guard being fitted to the hub, and then the wheel bearing housing and wheel mounting flange being fitted.

The guard is whole, and not like a letter 'C' like the fronts are.  So RR you will have cut a segment out of the new ones to get them to fit.  (in fact the s3 variants are similar in shape, but profiled differently, and with differently centred holes).
