It seems that Pocket-lint's anonymous tip was bang on the money, O2's upgrade microsite has confirmed that, for a limited time at least, it will cost existing customers (not just iPhone users) £20 per month remaining on their contract to buy themselves out. They can then take out a new contract with the provider for the new iPhone 4.

An O2 spokeperson told Pocket-lint: "Yes, you were right. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to be able to upgrade to iPhone 4."

It has also been suggested, by a reader no less, that you can also use O2 Recycle to sell your existing handset for anywhere up to £253 (for the 32GB iPhone 3GS). Essentially, that means, should you have 6 months left on your contract, and the iPhone 4 costs £250 new (as expected), you would only need to pay around £117- on top of a basic price plan - for a full upgrade.

But careful everyone, it says the Early Upgrade fee is only available up until the 24th July and cannot be used in conjuction with the O2 Priority List (whatever that is).

EDIT: I notice there is no mention of tarriff's yet, so who knows how much they will ask for.

2ND EDIT: Be very careful of the O2 Recycle, they seem to be advertising this everywhere and yet its actually run by a different company to O2 called Redeem plc.

If your interested in the Early upgrade I'd leave it until the week before 24th July to upgrade. That way you use as much of your current contract and save another £20 or more depending on your contract dates.

I'd imagine that tariffs wont change, especially with competition from orange and vodafone.

I personally will be using mazuma to trade my 3GS in.

They have been at £245 for ages ( at least a couple of months )

Used them about 4 or 5 times now all always done within about 3 days.

EDIT: I notice there is no mention of tarriff's yet, so who knows how much they will ask for.

I'd imagine that tariffs wont change, especially with competition from orange and vodafone.

Assuming I can get a 16gig for £450 on PAYG I'll do that and sell my 3gs to partly subsidise the £450. I'm not up for starting another 18 month contract as the iphone 4 is likely to be upgraded before that would be up.

I think I might be better off with a PAYG as my current tarriff is £15 pm.

So assuming I'd need a £45 or more tarriff (for at least 18 months) to get the iPhone free than that's an increase of at least £30 per month and £540 over the 18 or £720 over the 24.  Always leaving me free to give them the bird at any time I wish.

As mentioned earlier, I was told that O2 will not insure PAYG handsets when used with Pay Monthly Sim's because call charges are not covered in the PAYG insurance policy.

The phone won't be free at launch on any contract, well not with O2 anyhow.  

They usually make the 16gb free on a 24month contract after it's been out about 6 months.

According to the 02 website if you upgrade by buying a pay as you go iphone they will transfer the insurance, not that I have insurance with them anyway!
