DSG Question

Ok, so when in sport or drive i can just use the flappy paddles to move gears up and down ?, and if i does then will it work only in paddles for that drive or does it revert back to Auto ?, or can you turn it off ?, noob question but the manual is not clear ?

It will revert to auto after a set period of time or you can hold the + paddle for 5 secs or so and it will revert.

you can use the paddles whenever you like. then if you stop using them after 30 seconds or so, it reverts to auto.

But you can still use the paddles after the 30 secs if you know what i mean

Ahh i see, i was just coming home and gave it a go and dropped down to third then thought it would go back itself and left me revving the nuts off 3rd

i forget sometimes too, i have it in manual and completely forget, go everywhere in 2nd

Probably best to only use D-mode for slow traffic or urban and pop into M-mode at all other times and think and shift exactly as if a conventional manual box. But knowing you can change options and override selections at any time. DSG takes a little bit of getting used to but it becomes natural and fluid.

S-mode is fun on multi-junction roundabouts, especially if someone is harrassing you from behind.. You'll drop them fast unless they are really on it and have the performance.

If your in manual and coming to a junction you also dont have to worry about changing down, it will do this for you.

I did what sounds like the same thing when I first had mine, does take a bit of getting used to as RR said but once you do ...

....I tend to continue thinking manual and shift down the gears but allow it to change from 2nd to 1st automatically which it only does when you come to a stop.

If you do forget it will also automatically shift up at the red-line to save you bouncing off the limiter, and a quick look at the DIS should help you determine what the box is up to.

Thx chaps, another really daft question, what happens on steep ramps?, I negotiate quite steep ramps in the car park at work, what happens if you stop half way up ?, does the car give you the correct amount of revs to stop you stalling ?, sounds stupid I guess but never had a manual so not sure, ps don't think it has hill hold ?

I normally just hold mine on the footbrake as it will creep backwards if the slope is fairly steep although on gentle stuff it will hold on the dsg but dont like doing it for long periods obviously,
Pretty sure Hillhold is now standard on DSG Scirocco models though

Just checked the Rocco brochure i have here and its says that hill hold is standard on DSG models, result!
