245 section tyres - will they fit?

Alright, I need more grip and I am considering some 17" lightweight alloys for track use and wondered whether or not 245-40-17 tyres would fit okay width-wise.

The radius will be 5mm less than the 225-40-18's but it is the width I'm wondering about. Similarly I believe I would have to have at least 8" alloys for correct tyre width fitment too.

The tyres I'm considering are the Toyo R888's see below.

Funny you mention road legal track tyres, I was speaking to someone today who runs an old factory Leon Cupra Cup car as a track slag and I asked what tyres he used? He said he's found Dunlop DZ02G to be the best, gets a good 6 trackdays (very hard use, soft compound) out of a set if you rotate them and they stick like the proverbial.

Similar in price to R888s and come in either medium or soft compound for about £140-£160 a tyre - something to consider, as a Leon is not far off our size/weight. I think I'll try a set next time.

Sizing, not entirely sure, sorry.

I've managed to find a tyre width to rim width calculator too.

245 section tyres should fit on anything between 8" to 9.5" :happy2:

All I need to know now is will the tyre width fit under the arches okay?

You will have a mission making them fit mate but I think it is possible with the correct offset. Also unless you run a lot of camber for the front arches you will rub a lot if you want the car to be low, if its high you probably shouldnt have too much of a problem..

I had 235/40/18 R888's on the S3 and that was with a ET42 wheel, I think with an ET45+ wheel and rolled arches, 2+ degrees negative camber you should have them fit on without too much trouble..

Im trying to get the 265's on but I need 9" rims for that, up to now I have only found a couple of wheels than I can get in the 5x112 with the correct offset.

Send me an email and ill send you an excel document that I have which should help you out with what your doing!

I was thinking about also dropping a size to 17" x 8" alloys.

The new OZ Alleggerita HLT ones look promising at just 6.4kg's each :surprised:

So, I looked and they do them in 18"...... DAMN YOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!

Fantastic sizing, 17x8 or 18X8 5-112 ET48. Not cheap though.  :sad:

Looked at them when I was looking at what wheels to get but they were not going to be available until early March apparently.. Couldn't wait that long. They are stunning  :happy2: :happy2:

Just read all the posts again.  Just a thought Hurdy.  Doesn't your brake set up need a little more room than 17"s or am I having a blonde moment.

No problem, we've been discussing lightweight wheels for a while over on the dark side actually and it's been noted that some OZ wheels are a little weak, fine for driving, but buckle easily with potholes etc. that's why the Superleggeras were withdrawn.

Even at 1kg per wheel heavier, I think I'd still go down the Speedline route and save myself £450+.

On the tyre side, you should be OK.  Although the Toyo 888 is a straight side wall the width of Toyo's is usually less that otherr brands IE a 245 Toyo would probably be the same measuerd width as, say a 235 Goodyear....  HTH  :happy2:

Not quite blonde, but the TAROX's will fit under 17"'s It is just that some won't have clearance to the spokes. The Alleggerita's have a good spoke clearance and should still fit.
