big brake kit question
« on: June 16, 2010, 07:43:00 am »
does anyone have experience of fitting a big brake kit with the standard 18" Pescara Alloys for the Edition 30? Are you finding spacers are needed, or do the Pescaras not fit at all requiring aftermarket alloys?

The New VWR brake kit is designed to go behind standard pescara's

Proper brake kit too! so much pad area compared to most other "big" brake kits

Jabba - Bit cheeky that you know as well as I do the VWR kits got a 6-7mm spacer buit in the bell thats the reason theres no spigot left on the hub and why there supplying the ebay bolts to keep your wheels attached.

Dont want to debate it with you and the VWR kit may well be getting there but it aint there yet  :popcornsoda:

To get a BBK to fit behind pescaras and keep the original geometry with no spacer on the bell is very difficult due to the spoke design on the 7.5" sized wheel.

You'll need a slender caliper and a max 28mm wide disc generally and in most cases skinny pads, so it tends to be competition products and not OEM stuff you'll need

The AP Racing Pro5000 kit lends itself very well to pescaras with no spacer AT ALL. The by -product is that the whole assembly with the Pro5000 disc is less than 10kg per corner. With the pro5000 kit, you also have a choice of airgaps on the disc depending on useage - they're all 28mm wide but you can beef up the discs depending on useage, track/rally etc etc.

They're also race proven and were standard equipment on the 300-450BHP Metro6R4

They can be got together for about 1350GBP much less than other BBK's

What the man said............

Or just get some BBS VZ's (same design as the Pescara's but 8" and a better spoke design), sell the Ed 30 wheels to fund the BBS's and get some 996TT calipers behind with 2-3mm clearance (granted with some clever carrier machining)

It works, and they are fantastic.

he is well happy with the OEM+ feel, loves the pedal feel, and the stability the rear S3's give.  They are a great set up.

There is some new bits being tryed on my car at the min that will sort that issue  :happy2:
and there not ebay bolts...

I am the only person that seems to have had problems with the disks warping (in which they have been very helpful in hand delivering new disks that have been heat treated differently) this has now solved the warping issue...
The rest of the kit would be very difficult to beat if im honest, I have tryed lots of deferent setups over the years and this is one of the best i have had in terms of feel and outright stopping power.

On my own cars over the years i have tryed AP racing kit with 2 pice disks on my Fabia, The ECS stage 5 kit on the audi (which was shocking!) Proper Alcon brakes on my Leon Cup car! (there awesome) and tryed most combos that have come in on customers cars... so its not as if i haven't tryed various kits.

I must say tho, if i hadn't gone for the VWR kit my other choice was the Alcon kit....

Not tyring to start a debate... just dont like things being poo pooed without being given a chance

No I respect that mate and Im sure they will be awesome brakes, they've got some bugs to iron out and then they can start to prove themselves, it'll take time but with their marketing department in full swing (Matt  ) Im sure they'll end up the defacto setup. I get frustrated in the fact that they are charging top top money for customers to test them. Whats encouraging is that they sorted some new rotors for you - thats top notch customer service and should be acknowledged as such.

The ebay bolt reference was to some bolts that I got shown that had no reference/markings and being as they are now carrying the full weight of the car should have been seriously uprated to EN16 or similar, I have caliper mount bolts made for special application with 70 Tonnes tensile strength that dont carry as much load as the longer wheel bolts do.

Coming from an aerospace background - unmarked bolts ring alarm bells.

Having said all that these are things that will no doubt get sorted, I know what its like to be putting fires out..... when things settle down it will no doubt be a very capable sorted kit that in time people will no doubt be happy to pay the premium that they are currently asking.

So are they replacing the duff ones Matt so far that folks have paid the big bucks for, or was it just one unlucky set?     :popcornsoda:

Tell you what dont answer that, dont want to kick the arse out of it. Most people will never know theres a problem and wont get them hot enough, I'd much prefer them to spend another 12 quid a corner and put a spigot on the bell instead of the machined VWR logo and/or supply some uprated bolts to hold the wheels on!

Good to know they're getting there tho

Thats a fair point, could be a batch problem.

If I had to put money on a reliable pair of rotors I'd probably pick Alcon though.

Brembo/AP/Alcon They're all cast at the same place eurac in Poole Dorset. To more or less the same recipe I'm led to believe.

So far its only been mine and a set that went onto one of the VW cup cars that have had problems!
Think its to do with the extra heat the DS3000s put through the disk when being used properly....
Im pretty sure 99% of people will never suffer from it even on track, and running DS2500 pads would mean they wouldn't even get to that temp anyway! Henry did mention that its so isolated that only one of the people in the VW cup running them managed to warp them too (out of the 6-7 that are running the same setup fitted at the same time)

Once i report back about the different types of spigots im testing, Henry said that he will send them out to everyone that has a set, as an upgrade to the kit!

They might be having isolated issues (that 99% of people wont even suffer from) but atlest there going out of there way to sort the problem... That is a BIG plus point for me, rather than getting a problem with APs like i did on my Fabia and being told i would have to buy the new disk as it was obviously down to me that they warped a week after fitting them

Atleast your not just a number with Caparo  :happy2:
