Pete's Steel Grey GTI
« on: June 17, 2010, 11:17:18 pm »
Well chaps... Perhaps overdue, as I'm actually more or less at the end of my project mod wise, having owned the car for a year. I'll have it for a while yet though   I'd always wanted a Mk5 GTI and was in the market for an upgrade from my 03' 1.6 Clio.

I bought the car last June with standard spec plus the winter pack and the tyre pressure sensor.
I loved it as it was tbh, but had always planned to mod it with OEM parts and keep it subtle having seen a lot of fine examples on here. Eventually, I ended up with a look in mind and to be honest, I've stuck to it bit by bit. Nothing extravagant, but still required some saving  :indifferent:

First phase of mods were;

- OEM GTI red trim mats
- VAGCOM lead from Nigel  :happy2:
- ITG PF
- OEM Arm rest
- Footrest and seat inlays
- Phillips 6000k Xenon foglight bulbs
- OEM underseat drivers side tray
- R32/OEM Xenons (HAD to have them as my Clio had them, once you've had Xenons I don't think you go without them again... Big thanks to Jay with fitting ((JPC))  :happy2: )
- RNS-510
- MDI Interface + USB Lead
- Hawk HPS performance front pads
- Hertz DSK165 front component speakers
- 8Jx18 Shadow Monza reps (which were eventually sold on ebay and were only going to be winter rims anyhow...)
- VC's sexy red GTI decal on the ally strip above the glove box

These bits were put on over the last 9 months or so.

And yesterday was the day of the main exterior mods and final'ish touches. So, I loaded the car up on Tues night and the following went on;
- .:R32 rear clusters
- Ed30 splitter
- Black front VW badge
- 7.5x18 Genuine Audi S-Line Split rims in OEM silver
- 4x ContiSport 3 tyres

Well chuffed with the results tbh

First of all, I know it needs a clean!   More pics to come in the natural daylight once that's done.

Whats left? Well, colour code the skirts + rear bumper leaving the black plastic diffuser, a remap of some sort (would like to touch 250hp and leave it there once I've got the cash for a new clutch too) and I've toyed with a little drop, but, tbh I'm quite happy with the stance on the standard springs   Maybe 20mm on H&Rs to close the gap in the arches. It's never going to be tracked though so I don't need anything that stiffens the ride or tightens the handling.
Some 18" Monzas will also be on the list as winter wheels.

I've got the red rear GTI badge to fit but not sure if it'll look good on the Grey?
Few scratch repairs exterior and to a few fascias to come too, but mod wise I think I'll settle somewhere there

Cheers for looking guys
Pete.

Thanks mate

Tell a lie, they're in fact 6000k fog light bulbs but yeah, I really like the light output. The soul reason I got them was to use them with the cornering lights, but turns out I don't have the right electrics controller!  Chin up...

Fog Bulbs: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300316940171&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:GB:1123

The seller I got the badge from doesn't unfortunately list them anymore it seems, but the seller was 'lucky-7-styling'.
Tbh if the badge doesn't suit the rear profile I'm looking for, then I could flog you mine. I'll keep you posted

They go for anywhere between £400-£1200 on there, with and without tyres and condition dependent obviously.
Mine have a few scuffs and kerbing' but ultimately, I'll refurb them.

Thanks Swansea hard-man
I agree with the drop... but, not yet! And I do like how it sits currently, so that's at the back of the queue unfortunately.

Colour coding the rear bumper + skirts is next on the list  :jumpmove:
When will Bens black GTI thread begin to take shape?  :happy2:

Some more from earlier before the light faded totally (sorry about the quality, all on my LG Renoir with fading light and a poor flash - but they'll do):

(Just to show the Xenon fogs  :innocent:)

Cheers dude. Hmm, I think on a CW it would.
With the Grey, I definitely want to do the skirts and the bumper. I don't like the shape of the Ed30 bumper too much for some reason, so going for the black diffuser look suits me, all in all.

- Small update.

Did a mini detail with Martin (Drapoon - thanks mate!) to tidy things up somewhat. The paintwork wasn't actually that bad previous but was still probably 60/70% swirled at least.

Started like this...

Got cracking:

Results were taking shape:

Some with Martins GTI:

Plans remain as:
- Spray the top bit of the rear bumper grey + spray skirts grey
- 10mm spacers for the rear axle with suitable bolts
- Pressed style plates (fully legal)
- Carbon wrap the side black glass looking panels
- Stage one map
- Fix the Air Con (replace compressor  :chicken: ) which happens Friday
- Touch up stone chips with VAG steel grey pencil
- Refurb the Splits in gunmetal Grey. Closer up they're in fairly bad nick on a couple

I think I'll settle for that for now.
More updates to come when the above materialise

Cheers.
Pete
