Aviva - likely premium loading with a Stage 1 Revo?
« on: June 19, 2010, 01:21:40 pm »
Hi

I've just got off the phone to Aviva - dearie me....

My car's up for renewal on the 22 June. They've quoted (unmodified) at £399 - but once my car reaches its third birthday in September I'm likely to get it Revo'd. I've just spent the last 25 minutes on the phone, to find out what the increase would be if/when I get the car re-mapped. After explaining that re-mapping and tuning were, indeed, the same thing, and finding the right drop-down, the operator spoke to the underwriters - who say the people who can give me a re-quote are only there Mon-Fri......

Greenlight have quoted £448 with a remap - which seems pretty good to me, although it doesn't include European breakdown which I do need for holidays, etc. and is included in the Aviva figure.

Has anyone had experience of how much Aviva load their premiums for re-maps?

Thanks

.
I don't know about Aviva but I am insured with Greenlight and they understand what mods are and will insure like-for-like. They don't charge extra for each mod unless you add to your policy during the year, and then it's a flat £25 fee to cover admin and paperwork. You'll be asked to list all your mods so they can all be covered. There's also a forum discount.

For a modded car, Greenlight are hard to beat for proper peace of mind.

Does Greenlight not offer insurance for a limited period in Europe?

I'll have to check my policy.

....Yes. You just phone them and give dates when you are abroad.

Like most UK insurers they don't include Nurburgring although they do offer cover for most UK circuits. They'd like to but it gets complicated by the Green Card European bureaucracy.

It wasn't European insurance that was the difference - both policies do that (although with Aviva you're just covered and don't need to let them know...) - it was breakdown insurance. That seems to work out quite expensive if buying it separately.

I'm tempted to go for Greenlight as they at least seem to know what I'll be doing with the car - but is there anyone else I should be thinking about? I think £450 for stage 1 with 5 yrs no claims is probably pretty much on the money....?

Thanks

For breakdown I use VW Assistance which uses RAC VW specialists and includes Europe anyway.

Try some other modfriendly insurers. These ones know what remaps/lowering/cosmetic mods etc are all about.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I'm with Aviva and have been also wondering what a stage 1 remap loading may cost.
I currently pay around £330 - £340 per year but I restrict the mileage to 6000 miles per year and the car is garaged.

I would remap without hesitation as i'm now out of warranty but as I cover no more than 1200 - 2000 miles per year, anything which increased the running costs has to be considered. I think this year it will cost me about £1.20 per mile to run as I have had a major service, cambelt / pump changed. Frightening when you stop to think!

I would be really interested to hear how much Aviva charge or even if they would consider a remapped car.
I'd also be interested to know how good Adrian Flux / Greenlight are i the event of a prang / payout etc. I will probably start another thread re this later rather than hijack this thread.

Thanks for the help. In the end, I went with Greenlight, as I just couldn't get a sensible person, human being (vs the computer!) or quote for the mod from Aviva.

Greenlight - straight through to a human being, friendly and extremely knowledgeable - clearly an enthusiast himself. Although I didn't need to hear that it would be really cheap to push it to stage 2, etc. as it wouldn't load the premium much - I don't expect my insurance company to start putting temptation in my way!
