ED30 NAV DISK MISSING
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:06:19 am »
Hi ,On the 15 May I collected my sons ed30 from a Jaguar dealer its mint and I am very happy with the car ,after a couple of days we realised there is no nav disc,I have aquired a copy on here from a kind member .It was playing on my mind so I mentioned it to the dealer he said he would speak to the previous owner and get it ,after a couple of weeks no news so emailed him and he said if it isnt here today I will just order one for you.

In the mean time the ED30 has required its 2yr service so I asked about the nav disk and was quoted £133 plus vat we will need to get it from Germany in the past they have taken 5 wks ,ok  so I left it

On Tuesday  mailed him again reminding him of his promise to sort it out,Explaining I felt like you have had the money and dissapeared its become a issue because we paid top money for it ,we new it had to be taxed ,serviced etc within a month that was fine ,I even put some new tyres on as the exaltos looked worn with 4mm on them

Received a reply Yesterday ,It reads ,Hi I have just been handed a  disk I will post it to you today,I have a horrible feeling it will be a copy from someone,Although that isnt a issue ,Do you think it should be a OEM nav disk that was supplied with the car.

Funny thing when we bought the car He asked what do you do work wise , I said I work for trading standards

We paid £18k for the ED30 and I think he should either source from the original owner the correct disk or replace with oem

Would be interested in members opinions,I am very fussy with our cars and like things right. TIA

It should be OEM, i wouldn't want a copy if i paid top dollar.

Although a copy will work, anyone can get a copy, you want the original item which has an actual value.

If the satnav was factory fitted or dealer fitted, it should come with a satnav disc, regardless of price. If the unit was retrofitted, then I wouldn't expect a genuine disc.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Hmm, you bought it second hand ?, did you check this before you bought it, did they say it had the disc with it when you bought it ?, TBH its something i would have checked before hand and negotiated at the time of buying , i personally wouldn't expect recourse on something i forgot to ask if i am honest, thats just me though, i do hope you get it sorted, especially as they said they would do this afterwards for you) TBH i have never used the original disc, and when i update it i don't buy new discs either

More than likely it sounds as if the RNS-510 in the car will of been retro-fitted. There would of been no real benefit to the previous owner keeping the old nav disc.

I wouldn't concern yourself overly with a new disc they invariably go out of date quickly and collect dust. I would instead be demanding a free service or other such benefits in compensation for them not supplying the disc.

You could fight it out and get an OEM Nav disc, but I would be surprised if you ever came to actually using it.

don't think they will be stupid to give you a copy if they know you work for trading standards but you never know

Making a back up copy of the original isn't illegal unless you are selling them as genuine for profit :surprised:

I do the disc but only ask for the price of postage and another disc they come has a plain disc with no writing on you can tell its a copy.

I do have another that has a printed cover on it and looks quite good but I only use it for making the copy for the speed cams.

You can make a backup or archive of the software providing that backup is destroyed when you sell the original on.

You cannot sell the backup/archive as a copy or by telling someone its genuine.

Making a copy and giving it to someone for free is still breaking copyright law.

With media such as music/videos

If you never made a copy and loaned the CD to your friend, this is completely legal. The first sale doctrine gives you the right to dispose of your legal copy (i.e. the original) in any manner you see fit. This includes lending it out. However, if you lend it to your friend and he makes a copy, then he is violating copyright law.

One more thing, if you lend the CD to a friend with the knowledge that he intends to copy it, you could be guilty of “conspiracy to commit copyright infringement.” However a “conspiracy” charge is part of criminal law, not copyright law.
